Not horrible, just need the palette adjusting so it looks as awesome as the art. :)

Since we're going to have Sonic & Knuckles as the playable characters. Sonic and Knuckles on the screen are final, the wording is not. =P
I plan on having a floating object where the "Press Start Button" Object would be, so that when complete the title will say "Sonic & Knuckles in Sawnik: Modernisation Project"

Any comments/criticisms? This CAN be improved, so any suggestions are welcome.

    After scaling it down...

I'm going to be blunt: That title is ghastly. The art is hovering over the banner, but is missing legs anyway. In addition, the art you've chosen doesn't scale down for the MD well at all.

I'm of the opinion that the Sonic Advance-styled art is horribly contrasting with the surrounding Genesis-style artwork. Not only that, but the shading appears extremely flat and lacking detail; this could be rectified by adding some shading here and there, which you could potentially base off the large sprites from the Sonic Advance games. I also trust you'll be editing the layer priority to place the characters behind the logo like in the original Sonic 1, so I won't worry too much about that.

I dunno, I just don't think it's very compelling or interesting of a title screen. If you were to revamp the background to have some sort of simplistic pattern or to have art from one of the Sonic Advance games, it might look a bit more fitting. I like Advance 2 and 3's title screens, myself—perhaps you could base it off one of those?

The NTSC filter doesn't help much in terms of judging the shapes either, really. Could you take a clean shot with it off so the art itself can be better judged? The blurring hurts my eyes on an LCD monitor.

You should change the name to "Sonic & Knuckles: Modernisation Project" It just sounds so much more better that way, yeah I know it's a merged project and all but surely you can just have that name instead. You also need to turn fast blur effect and sprite limit on. :(

Sorry, but the artwork makes it look like a shoddy 8 bit pirate. No offense, but what was wrong with Modernisation Project? You can't just name a hack after a retail game, it'll confuse people. =P

This may or may not be relevant, but I think your base sprite still needs a little work. In particular the muzzle, which looks fine when drawn and shaded as Sonic, but for some reason, it makes Shadow look like he's got an oddly square jaw. Also, although I like what you've done with the trees in the far background, but with the black in between each one, it makes them stand out a little too much when compared with the leaves, and other areas of the background.

In order to make this seem less like an arsehole comment, however (because I really don't mean it to be), I love your design for the rocks under the grass.

I'd also like to see what ideas you have for the HUD - whether you're planning on something based on Sonic 1/3, or something of your own design.

That's not bad, but I suggest tweaking that palette still, I'm not too sure if the paette is finished or not but the Robotnik colours need changing.

It's actually Sonic Adventure art, simplified (and nowhere near finished), that screenshot is more of a basic concept. <_<
I'll probably be working on the art more on sunday, since I'm busy until then... =P

This is a test. The "Sonic & Knuckles" sign CAN'T be centered for some strange reason.

Edit: And yeah, the actual sonic and knuckles sprites are a work in progress... There's a fair bit of shading to do, and outlines to finish. =P

You can't edit Sonic's start position in SonED2, so remove your dummy object and edit misc\sloc_lev.bin by hand with an hex editor. 4 bytes per act, so to edit MZ1's starting position you have to skip the first 32 bytes.

    I have a new idea.

As you can see, we have Mighty in a glass cage with a Metal Sonic model. The plan is that you have to defeat the Metal Sonic, after which, you use 50 Rings to release Mighty (Or whomever is within the container) who then warps you to the special stage. To be honest, I don't think I can fit many of my ideas into a hack, so I may try and use a MultiMedia Fusion 2 Engine to create this game instead. I also have a second project Idea, but I'll wait until a demo of this is at least finished before starting on that one. Which reminds me, if anyone is any good with MMF2 technical wise, please may I request assistance from you.

So what, do you do this right at the end of the level, or right in the middle of playing it?

    Personally, I don't really like it for a couple of reasons;
    - First, it seems too much like an unnecessary miniboss to start with, no matter where in the level it's placed.
    - Second, following on from this, it seems like it would break the flow of the game to come across a boss whom you had to defeat in order to release a character who then allows you to reach the special stage.

If you look at previous games, it's been a quick and simple matter to get into the special stage - collect enough rings, find a ring/lamppost, jump in and go nuts. I'm afraid your method is rather more like an arduous task (much like Sonic Advance 2's Special Rings) which some players may rather avoid.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Star Fox approach. You can either go directly on from level to level, avoiding the Metal Sonic, in which case, you get the Bad Ending, or you can try and find the characters (in Act 3) and split off into a seperate set of levels. If you fail to locate the trapped character in the next level, you drop into either medium, or continue if your already in the easiest path. Think of it as seperate Goals.

I am aware of this, and I am trying to figure out how to change this, though if I do switch to MMF2, it shouldn't be a problem. I'll just add something behind them.
