Every time I take a look at this project, there's something new to see... This is certainly going to be a work of art once it's done.
Like the extra frames, but they don't seem to flow as well as the original animation... Instead of a sort of constant speed, he kind of bursts forward now and then, like he has a limp. It's not vastly huge, and I may be seeing things, but that's my take Impressive though. Be good to get more in-between head frames too for really detailed animation, but so far I like it
Good work people! They will never look consistent until all the frames are connected by inbetween frames. However if anyone seriously volunteers please PM me.
There has only been two inbetween frames added. There's more frames in the beginning, therefore, a much slower and smoother animation. The last few frames don't have this. Use your noggins a bit people.
I just finished Sonic's rolling animation. Expect a gif in the evening or later in the day, I still need to fix something. (I'm getting late at work, see you!)
One of the things I'm noticing about the in-between frames that have been added is that I, at least, can't really tell that they are actually a lower quality than the keyframes. Maybe not the most startling revelation ever, but it does mean that it might not take much work to create a reasonably good in-between set. I'm just not totally sure how that will translate when more of them have been added.
The rawness of the inbetweens is very noticeable to me, but I'm an animator anyway. I would, however, recommend that these rough inbetweens be used as placeholders/tests and cleaned up later. Although the important thing is to get the key frames finished before anything.
Question, do the frames in Sonic's running animation in the game occur every frame, every few frames, or what? If it's every frame then that's a big problem because we'd have to double it to 120 FPS to include the in-between frames. That's clearly a bad idea. If it's at least every other frame then it's not an issue.
Yeah, Sonic doesn't, to my knowledge, use an animation frame each game frame unless he's running (which uses an entirely different animation anyway).
Here is a more detailed answer to Blue Streak's question: Unfortunately, yes, it is possible to have an animation that updates every frame.
Then as an animator, you should know that it's better to have an animation that's a work in progress raw then have it complete. We're not dealing with simply redrawing existing frames anymore. We're making completely new ones. Vincent didn't really have to worry much about the flow of the animation (in terms of movement), but now he does. Again, don't criticize the quality of the frames yet. Criticize the animation. Once the animation is smoothen out and the frames are being finalized, then you can complain if Sonic's right thumb is too fat or not. The solution is simple, don't make extra frames for it. Just twiddle with the speed of the animation. If you want to smoothen out the running animation, then leave the legs alone, but and make changes to the upper body instead of it being repeated after 2 frames. The running animation is one of the animations in the game that doesn't really require additional frames, but you can still improve if you work on the other areas.
Amazing, keep up the good work you guys! I'm so proud of how well you are working together. This is a true community project :D
<!--quoteo(post=192639:date=May 2 2008, 06:35 AM:name=Chimpo)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Chimpo @ May 2 2008, 06:35 AM) The two inbetween frames added. However, I modified your first one. I move the back leg up a few pixels as well as shifted it to the left some since the leg jerked front then back and didn't come smooth at all. Sonic also hopped up and down quite fast. Your Version/My Version/Animated to better show the difference. [/quote] I'm no animator, but logically I think to do one in-between frame, you'd need to do another one for his leg moving to the back - that way it'll smoothen the whole animation out a bit. As people have already said, it looks like Sonic's got a sort of limp; but that's probably because the animation for Sonic's leg moving forwards will be longer than the animation for it moving back again.
Here we go!! As usual, it's still in WIP status, and that includes the little offset in the shine during frames. (P.s. Theoretically I should had stopped progressing before 5th May, but.. Sonic frames are like a drug ) Next Sonic animation will be A BOMB!! :D
You might want to tweak some parts so they don't go outside the sphere (for example, the shoe in the third frame), but it looks really awesome.
That jumping/rolling animation should have some extra frames. I'd like to see, what it looks, when it have some extra frames in it. I hope it save orginality, even whit extra frames. (I will fix this post, when my head is clear... Im drunk right now.)
Something else I've just noticed. The original "sphere" frame seemed to have a sligthly more prominent shadow. Here's both for comparison: EDIT: About any extra frames, I think we should take care of that after all the others are done.
