ICE, you might've just posted a split-second after I posted my post above your own - just making sure you've seen it ^^
<!--quoteo(post=186984:date=Apr 4 2008, 07:39 PM:name=Vincent)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Vincent @ Apr 4 2008, 07:39 PM) [/quote] I vote for the one on far right. It looks perfect to me. ICEknight, you said before that Eggman should be shaped like an egg, and now you're making his back flatter. You make his head smaller/lower than it's in the original sprite as well. Also, Vincent has done really nice shading on mustache, I don't see any good reason to change it. Considering the legs, again I think that Vincent got it right, the shading is the same as in the original.
It's not just the shading, but the shape of the foot. In the original, the close foot is narrower and more distant from the other foot. Sometimes the original shouldn't be used as a pixel-by-pixel source. Sometimes limitations caused by the size of an object can change the shape of an object. I think Robotnik's head should be a perfect circle, instead of a curve broken by a vertical line.
That was a palette limitation, not a choice by whoever drew the original sprite, since unlike Sonic 1, Sonic 2 only has two shades of red.

And that marks one of the last updates on Eggman I'll do for now: Jetzac and Love.self.hate both contributions will be gladly accepted. Let's focus on Emerald Hill Zone for BG art. Next week I'll start Sonic frames and by the time this program will be in use we'll hopefully have a compete level art and frames to play with.
Also, let me just say you're doing a fantastic job so far Vincent. Lesser men would have been tearing their nose hairs out at all the critique that's been posted. They'd be like, "t3h miN0r ch4ng3?! omgz!!!!". Nah but seriously, great job.

Basically: -Right hand removed. -Head and mustache shape. -Left foot, leg and nearby shadows. -Right leg and foot made a bit less stiff. -Trouser line made less curve. What do you guys think? Bigger version here:
Can you stop changing the goddamned mustache? The only reason it's so bland in Sonic 2 is due to palette limitations, not due to a stylistic change. Besides that, it's evident that a majority of the people in this thread prefer it ANYWAY.
Hey, ICEknight, would stop changing mustache and removing the right hand? Let's not blindly follow the original sprite.
Same goes for the glasses being black instead of blue, and the cape being orange. I would have never imagined it after reading the topic. So, I'm sorry if the mustache I posted offended anyone. =|
Your mustache looks like a chocolate splash or something. The left part's shape is wrong to (in comparison with the original). And why do you make Eggman's head smaller? It's clear to see in comparison with the original as well.
I was asked to make it darker, so I made its color look like the original. ...but you just said this 8 minutes ago. =| Because I think it looks more like the original character this way. It's not a conspiracy or anything, really.
