Think it might not be much of a change from S2 & S3 but that might have something to do with using the same colours. Not sure on how to tackle the top? I wanted to try something different to the star.
This can hang from high ceilings- it opens far more options, because it can hang from a high platform but still be reached from the ground. Regular upside-down is limited in use.
With this talk about upside-down monitors and starposts, I just got an idea. How about an upside-down starpost?

What possible purpose would an upside down starpost have? Unless it was out of reach and you had to flip the gravity.
Or you could make the upside down starpost be within reach of Sonic, but when he triggers it, it activates the gravity flip. Just throwin' shit out there.
Alright, this is getting fucking retarded. Someone get stared on some god damn lamp post before I blow my lid over how stupid upside down monitor is.
As a reference, here is a pic with the starposts from Sonic 1, 2, and 3. I think we should focus on progression, meaning we should draw a starpost which would fit next to Sonic 3's.

I wanted to see how a more "mechanical"-looking starpost would look. So, I made this. It's a modification of Matwek's.
Transformers! More then meets the eye! What's up with the star being all curvy? I'm pretty sure it was always meant to be a fully basic, stereotypical star. Also, how about inserting these ideas? The first one simply looks cool.
I like Test-Object's idea the most. The one with the two lamp post. Not that shit where he swings around. We want the Sign Post to be a quick flashy visual effect that can be seen even if you zoom by. Not a distraction.
Animated and a little extra: What if the starpost gets up? (the 3D games inspired lampost looks cool, but can it really be done? To give it the 3D effect they should be on different layers, and I'm sure this can't be done in the classic games. Not sure about E02, though)
