Eddie Lebron's Fan Film, "Sonic"

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by TheInvisibleSun, Sep 27, 2011.

  1. I agree. Its hard to believe that I invested my leisure time responding to every hate comment in such elaborate detail on why this fan film was going to succeed. But most of that hate transcended from the people I originally worked with. Or should I say, person since hes soly responsible for sabotaging my work. God damn, I regret ever meeting Spax or even allowing him to "assist" me with my project. Chances are the fan film wouldnt have received so such bile if I just hired people from craigslist or something. Cause none of this blackmail, encyclopedia dramatica bullshit would've happened. To this day, him and his croonies continue to harass me and my friends in the most horrific ways that I wont get into. The fact that he STILL holds a grudge against me from shit that happened 5 years ago is just ridiculous. So in that regard, Eddie was wise to just ignore the online threats.

I really respect Eddie for going out and doing what he loves, but this is just wrong on so many levels as a Sonic video.

No he did not. I'd say he got worse.

  5. Knowing that hes actually credited in Eddie's movie is very unsavory to me, especially after all the recent turmoil he caused with me and his own friends.

Wanna know what justified my reasons for cutting him from my project? He was stubborn, crass, unprofessional, immature, threw pointless tantrums, insulted artists/voice actors on skype, procrastinated with his load of the work, and hardly put effort into anything he did. Ever since then, hes been purposely trying to sabotage my projects by trolling, monitoring activity, having his goons relay personal info to use as blackmail, and getting my friends and family involved. To this day, he still pulls this crap and Im glad his friends are realizing how much of a loose cannon he is.

I'm uneducated on spax, what he has done, what he is known for, and all of that. If I need to be educated on the matter, PM me since I don't condone any type of internet trolling or bullying. That being said, the thread can go back on track!

I debated going point-by-point as to what I liked/what bothered me about this film, but I think this review pretty much covered it all. Not much left to say.

    So uh...

I said I apologized. Yeah, well...

I apologized for the whole SatAM Sonic stuff.

But... I think I'm going to be a lot less apologetic riiiight... now.

Good review. But just one little thing:

You know, I still wonder where this assumption of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik not being in character if he kills someone or an entire race came from, but I want it to stop.

Goofy looking character, yes. Villains who have had a high rate of killing people have had goofy ass costumes. The Joker being the biggest example, even as far back to the original Batman when this stuff was aimed at kids. Costumes in GENERAL are silly looking. That's right, even Darth Vader's. Silly, yes, but cool as hell.

AND... It's not like Robotnik doesn't have a huge Death Machine. It's in the name itself: Death Egg. Parody? Yes. But when it's parodying a thing that did THIS...

...Then there's proof enough that he's not. above. KILLING. ANYTHING. And this is among other things in his repertoire such as bombing an entire forrest in search of the Chaos Emeralds to power this thing and electrocuting the guy that he fooled into helping him out.

Goofy ass villain? I think SatAM was actually on to something. Fallen hero character? I'll take that, but don't take away the idea that he can kill. He's not above it. He never was above it. For the last fucking time, Robotnik is able to do terrible things.

When Batman and the Joker were created, sure, comics were aimed at kids. But in the late 30's and early 40's, people didn't freak out at the fact that kids were reading something that featured people dying. It was never all that crazy or graphic either. Things were toned down in the 50's, which I'm sure you're aware of, and the Joker didn't kill a thing until the 70's. Even then, it wasn't anything too graphic. The really graphic murders of the Joker didn't really happen until the comic was no longer being aimed at a young demographic. The comic tried to grow up with its readership, which can explain why comic books are a shrinking medium, while the movies/cartoons/videogames continue to thrive. The cartoons can still be aimed at kids, even if the latest issue of Batman has the Joker ripping his face off and hanging in on the wall.

The Joker was designed to be one of those frightening things where, yes, he looks exactly like a clown, but he isn't going to act like one. That was established right from the get-go. But Dr. Eggman? In the first game, he doesn't kill anything. He goes out of his way from killing anything at all. He captures animals. Uses them as living batteries in his machines in his quest to find the Chaos Emeralds. It might be terrifying for Pocky to be stuck in something, but he can also get out really, really easily. It takes one bop from Sonic to free him, and he hops out unharmed, unphased, and none the worse for wear. As time has gone on, Eggman has even steered away from using animals. He's used flowers, rings, and even nothing at all. Using animals to power his robots was a quick, easy fix to set up a mass army overnight.

The Death Egg? Yes, an obvious parody of the Death Star. But to be fair, we never saw it in action. We have no idea what the Death Egg was going to do. Was it really going to blow up the planet? I doubt it. What would be the point of that? Even in Sonic Adventure 2, it never really seemed like Eggman wanted to kill everyone. He blew up half of the moon, but if Sonic hadn't done anything and the President refused? Would Eggman have fired that laser and killed everyone in fake San Francisco? If he did, I don't think he'd be happy about. If he was, that would be the turning point to make him that dark and dreary villain that SatAM featured. That would be the moment of his fall. But that didn't happen, and so he was never tempted to make that point of no turning back.

Dr. Eggman, as designed by Ohshima and used in the classic games, was not the cold-hearted, genocide-instigating villain of Eddie's film. Not even close.

When Eggman electrocuted Knuckles in the Hidden Palace Zone? He shocked him, yes, but he also flew away without looking back to see if Knuckles was dead. He probably knew that Knuckles was down for the count, but he didn't outright try to kill him. Eggman could have very easily fired at the fallen figure after. He could have tried to kill Sonic and Tails while they stood there confused. But he didn't. Eggman might want to win, but does he really want to do it with no obstacle? In Sonic 2, Eggman follows Sonic to West Side Island because he assumes Sonic will lead him to where the Chaos Emeralds ended up after the first game. Even though Sonic isn't looking for them. Lo and behold, the Chaos Emeralds do end up there, but what does Eggman do? He knows Sonic has no idea he is there. Instead of having a sneak attack upon a napping Sonic near his plane, he lights a forest on fire and taunts Sonic. That is not an evil mastermind not above killing people. Maybe something died in the fire he set off on Angel Island, but he wasn't outright trying to kill people. Even when he thinks he kills Sonic in Sonic Adventure 2? He is holding a gun in his hand, but instead of firing it at Sonic point blank while he's trapped in that tube, he just shoots Sonic off into space. That tells me that while Eggman can talk a big game, he doesn't have the stomach to kill anyone himself. The badniks are meant to be deterrents from anyone looking to mess with his plans. They aren't death machines in the truest sense, especially since they're so easy to defeat most of the time...

The Robotnik in the Saturday morning series works in that specific universe. However, it doesn't work in the games, or most of the other spin-off media featuring Sonic and his friends. The only way I'd want to see that dark version of Robotnik is if they decided to wrap up that cartoon just so it can no longer have a cliffhanger ending (which I doubt would happen anytime soon, the only possibility being during an anniversary), or if he showed up for an arc in the Archie comic book. If the game Eggman was trying to act that way, it would go against the character that he's been since 1991.

This is straying off topic again, but David - remember the OVA Robotnik? Goofy as all hell - but he wanted to totally destroy the Land of the Sky. I believe Knuckles said something about the continents being "blown to pieces".

I'm not trying to argue about Robotnik's personality (he literally doesn't have one; he's fictional, and acts however Sega needs him to to sell games). I'm just saying that his goofy game version has been coupled with being pretty damn cold-hearted in the past, and it worked.

I'm also not defending the Sonic Fan Film's portrayal, which I found to be cliche.

THANK YOU. Regardless of how I view the OVA due to things like Metal Sonic, you at least understand and bring up very valid points.

It's just that their continuity has itself completely fucked over since 1998 because of how market heavy this franchise has been that it's forgotten what it was like then until now.* Yes, Eddie's Robotnik is cliche, but it at least remembers that Robotnik is not above destroying things. Actually, did he have a reason to want to destroy the Land of the Sky beyond living on some planet of some sort and greedy ambition and weird pedophilia-ish material (I do believe Sara was younger than 18)? Sounds like Robotnik plus weird Japanese culture attached.

Oh, the Death Egg wouldn't have shot a laser down on Earth/Mobius? Then why call it Death Egg? Why not the Egg Star? With as simple as you want this franchise to be that implies that he meant to cause Death. Egg Star is vague enough to not even include that connotation.

Yes, that material wasn't so incredibly dark to include graphic killings.** And? I don't want that to be the norm of Sonic either. But holy shit, I want Robotnik to not be afraid to do anything to achieve his goals anymore. I don't want him to be usurped so fucking easily anymore. I want a villain who can stand up against his opposer with a fighting chance again. Challenge? Yeah, sure. He could want that. But he turned his back on Knuckles without even caring even if he did kill him. My point still stands.

*The only problem I'm having is that the games are still not as developed as they should be. Otherwise, I've liked what's happened to Robotnik lately. Selfish and greedy, and not worried about how he'll screw someone else over in his ambition and definitely not above killing people. Anything to achieve his popularity as a "hero". I just wish he'd be a little more ambitious and really not want Sonic in his way and actually pose something of a challenge to Sonic if he wants a challenge for himself. Challenge the player, not the CPU that the player's fighting against.

**Which to expound upon, Adventure Time surprisingly gets away with this. So... why shouldn't Robotnik be allowed to do that, regardless? I think I smell a bit of double standard here.

  16. And in Sonic Adventure 2, he fuckin' pushed that button and laughed like a maniac while declaring a new era for the Empire of Eggman.

He's PERFECTLY capable of committing genocide.

These walls of text are too tiring to read. Are we debating if videogame Robotnik is capable of harming or killing?

Yeah, he is. He's always wanted Sonic dead, though less as of recent as he's developed a lot of respect for the hedgehog. He's not above blowing things up and threatening, and if pushed will go to extremes like pulling a gun on Amy or sending Sonic to his death in space by blowing up his space pod.

That said, he is a very confused character. Often he joins up with Sonic and gang when he realises that the world is at stake- he is very aware that he is part of the human race and is crushed when he realises his grandfather helped Black Doom. He was also guilty of lying to Shadow about his origins and apologises to him gravely for doing so. He has an odd set of morals and he won't side with anything which threatens the earth in such a way where his plans will become impossible, yet he's happy to blow up Station Square and kill people in the city (though this is more of an indirect result of his actions).

He's not really for the mass killing of people in cold blood (why do you think he demonstrated the Eclipse Cannon on the moon instead?), though he is more happy to send his robots or machines out and turn a blind eye if something did happen- he is very careless. He is also childish, and like children, the seriousness of his actions don't seem to register. It's almost like he's pushing his boundaries because he knows Sonic will prevail, and is pushing it until he does win. He'll probably get bored once he does win, as he shows that he misses Sonic in some circumstances.

And the Death Egg- that's a homage to the Death Star. There was never anything until Sonic Battle to show that the Death Egg had a laser on it and even then it was the Death Egg III. Previously everyone assumed it did because everyone watched Star Wars.

But yeah, the Death Egg is a serious weapon of some kind. At least it's the base of his operations and the storage for his battle mechs at the very least. He is happy to kill Sonic and Tails and any other heroes who stand in his way as pests, but there's nothing to suggest he would use it on the civilians and animals of earth. It's a menacing and intimidating contraption, one that he could use to gain power over everything else with fear alone if he needed.

I don't necessarily mind the idea Eggman reinterpreted as an extremist genocidal dictator, or willing to commit murder (launching Sonic out of the Ark is still one of my favorite moments in the series), but I do think it's an issue that a lot of the creative decisions made in the film directly undermine trying to play the character seriously.

Julian Kintobor was always a really hokey justification for the name Robotnik in the western fiction. It isn't any less ridiculous when someone says it with a straight face shadowed on a TV monitor. The Classic Eggman outfit with the triangle cape and mickey mouse pants is supposed to be utterly ridiculous, and I have to imagine it was only chosen over the SA outfit either to avoid evoking 06 or because it was cheaper to design. And a madman who's apparently trying to rule by fear, firepower, and assimilation...why does he still use robots shaped like cartoon animals? Why do the buzzbombers fire bullets with the speed and fanfare of dispensing soda? What function could the motobugs serve besides tripping people, as they're small and completely unarmed? Why do the Gammabots look so ill-equipped to fight the humans they're oppressing?

He also seems completely out of place as a villain to Sonic. Sonic as a constant in adaptations lives to laugh in the face of danger and make Eggman mad in a humorous fashion. SatAM Robotnik is malicious, but he's still obnoxious when his plans succeed or fail, and they even gave him Snivley as someone he could bitch and moan to. Sonic and his nemesis are both larger than life in their heroics and villainy, and the blue guy exists to make sure Eggman makes an ass of himself in public. In a world where Sonic is exponentially the hammiest guy in the universe and Robotnik is just an isolated man stuck behind a monitor with his droning robots...it doesn't quite work.
