Now that you mention it, I remember this happening in other AI files in the database, as well. There's sometimes a certain layer that looks for an image in your hard drive.

It looks like the new 4x frame has a white background instead of it being transparent.

The reason that causes this to happen is the imported file lacking of the correct BG transparency information.

Don't trouble yourself too much, I prepared for you thanks to the great LOst's 2006 Spriterip:

    Sonic's 4X spriterip READY - FOR - USE.
    Tails's 4X spriterip READY - FOR - USE.
    Knuckles's 4X spriterip READY - FOR - USE.

    Hope you like it!

  5. Hi Vincent, love the tutorial. I'm at the part where I have to go to file then place, but it won't let me click place as its in the faded writing. How do I make it so that I can click place?

:D Yay!!!! I might be able to start actually helping out with the project!

On a side note I have vectored a "HD" version of a nice avatar I have seen on here, but it wont let me "save for web and devices"

    Here is the .psd file

    http://www.box.net/shared/u12xvs2jex

I vectored this in Illustrator CS2 saved the frames as images, imported them into Photoshop and then animated it. but it wont let me export as a .gif file

Any ideas will be greatly apreciated!

Making animated gif with Photoshop is possible, but way too complicated!

    Use this program instead.

It's actually fairly simple. Just make sure the "animation" toolbar is visible. From there it's a simple case of creating new frames, changing your layers until you have your desired animation (and frame delays if needed), and goinf file>save for web... From there you can choose the amount of colours etc, as well as preview the loop.

    Very nice try Hodgy! ;)

As you have seen, doing Vector Art with Illustrator is extremely satisfying and fun, and only requires a few time spent learning the basics.

In this last lesson, you'll learn how to make a New HD Frame assembling all the concepts from the previous tutorials.
This is the way I actually remaster Sonic frames for Sonic 2 HD, the result of my personal experience with AI spent in hundreds of hours of remastering:

    Lesson 3 - Download!

    Enjoy!

  14. Woohoo another lesson! Time to start making sprites. ;)

  15. This is gonna seem pretty stupid compared to some of the questions asked, but for some reason the .avi extension when opened in my Windows Media Player (pause for bullying) is just a sound file. How do I see it properly, or what can open it better?

That'd be due to not having the proper video codec. if you got XP search for XP Codecs, or Vista if you have that. It should have all the needed video codecs to watch modern Video files.

You probably miss a codec. If you're too lazy to search for it, try VLC Media Player.

I'm learning to use Illustrator because of this project, and I had a hard time doing it, because all or most of the tuts I found on the web are either too complicated because they're written by a complete pro who does not feel a beginner's problems, or they're just pointless.
This tutorial, however, is very well done - short, easy, to the point and amusing. Very good! :( :(

    Thanks, Strike Da Mic! ^^

These tutorials does not cover advanced features, mainly due all that's needed is video-explained there.
Don't worry about the "apparent" difficulty (If you follow the Lessons is just a matter of few hours) of using it, I didn't even know what was Illustrator before Sonic 2HD, so anyone good-willed like you can learn it quickly! ;)

Never forget, talent alone goes nowhere without dedicated motivation. You got that and your talent will be shaped thanks to practice! :(
