Did I just buy a pirated Mega Collection Plus at Morrisons?

    It was my munch break today and so I decided to head down to Morrisons. And I was just browsing about the electronics section, saw MC+ for 4 quid and thought I may as well buy it. So when I get home and want to install it, something doesn't seem right. First off there's no manual and instead of getting an auto-run asking me to install the game, I get this:
    <img src="http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/AlexBCA/SMCPFolder.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Just an RAR and that single "checksum.txt" (which contains only 16D50A30F03D61B6733178F19CFFB692). Confused, I extract the RAR and get this:

    <img src="http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/AlexBCA/ExtractFolder.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    What's a UDF file btw? I couldn't open it directly, and tried mounting it with DAEMON which actually worked and everything went smoothly from there. But you know I was still thinking that all this was certainly unusual. Not everybody will have the tools to get so far as extract the RAR, yet alone mount the image. Since when do PC games come like this? Installation finished and I tried to run the game. What do I get? The game asks me for the DVD.

    Now I want to ask you smart people, is this even a real copy of the game? Nothing about it is really convincing me. And I threw away the reciept without thinking about it. (But it's only £3.99, so I'll gladly pick up another copy if you think this a scam and can somehow be traced).

    Pictures of the DVD/Case for reference. I noticed the CD is totally different to the <a href="http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Mega_Collection_Plus#Scans" target="_blank">one shown on the Wiki</a>, but the Wiki only has pictures of the console CDs.

    <img src="http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/AlexBCA/Picture3.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    Just to note- the PEGI rating is of the new kind.
    <img src="http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/AlexBCA/Picture4.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    EDIT: Whoops, didn't notice the poor quality of the pictures. If you want to see better ones then let me know.
    EDIT2: <a href="http://www.avanquest.com/UK/" target="_blank">Avanquest</a> published this or something apparently. Their name is on the back cover, and this is the boxart on their site:

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
    ... no officially published game would EVER get ... well, published in such a ridiculous manner. :psyduck: You obviously bought a pirated copy.

    That's what I was thinking. I suppose I'll buy another and keep the receipt to see what can be done about it.

    The box art and disc look slightly different from my version of the game. The installation should also go like every other PC game, and it shouldn't ask for a DVD. Definitely sounds pirated to me.

    There's also no Avanquest logo on the box.

    Does anyone know what 'GSP' stands for in the top-right of the box?

    The former name for Avanquest. Just googled them real quick. <a href="http://www.avanquest.com/UK/gsp_index.html?tr1=AQ_UK_WS_GSPHOME" target="_blank">Here</a>. Why would they have both this and the Avanquest logo on the box?

    I UDF is a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Disk_Format" target="_blank">universal disk format</a>, so it seems legit in the sense that its a huge, disk realted file. Its odd that it wont play however. Are you sure you have the correct specs? Maybe its a different region? (if thats even possible with PC games)

    Also, maybe this can help you: <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321640" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321640</a>

    Mine is the normal kind as well, you know, dozens of files and booting up automatically. These .uif files is what I usually download from the rom sites.

    When I got the install menu it said that French was standard. But it's all European, there shouldn't be a difference to my knowledge. Also, even if the UDF is legit, I owuldn't expect it to be in a RAR (even moreso with zero explanation about how to use either).

    Definitely has to be a pirated copy, my SMCP booted up right away with an install screen and consisted of dozens of files in the CD. The lack of the SEGA logo on the front cover also means it's pirated (although odd that they kept it on the CD).

    This is the disc another member showed me:
    <img src="http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h192/AlexBCA/2954fw8.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Totally convinced that it isn't real. This is somewhat exciting for me actually. I want to know what I can do about it.

    Go to the shop and complain about it saying you were given a pirated game, or be upset you spent money on something you could have got for free off the internet. There really isn't a whole lot you can do.

    I've got no receipt (silly me threw it away) but was going to buy another simply because it's cheap and I want one. Do you really think there's nothing I can do? Morrisons is a leading supermarket chain here- surely you wouldn't expect them to knowingly sell pirated stock.

    hmm, that is strange, Morrisons? something's obviously not right here, if there were a whole rack full of them, wouldn't that mean the chances of the other copies being fake too, by quite high? infact If you buy another one KEEP THE RECEIPT, just in case that's a fake too

    Vangar: The disc looks brilliantly authentic. It even has holographic "Sonic Mega Collection" text on the underside.
    MarkeyJester: I intend to. It would be really cool if I could get somewhere with it and a receipt.

    No, not in the sense that the disc is damaged, because it <b>obviously</b> isn't,
    but a mistake someone made?

    You should notify the department manager or store manager about that. Obviously something's gone awry in the supply chain. It may not even be the fault of the store (a regular employee won't be able to tell while stocking whether it's an authentic title or not, they just assume it is), but could be due to a supplier's fault.

    Hmm, next time I'm in Morrisons I'll see if the same thing happens to me. I've noticed the £3.99 offer, but never went for it.

    Maybe I should.
