I apologize if making this thread is out of line—I'm not as familiar with forum etiquette as I'd like to be. Still, I imagine having all of this information in one place could be useful to some.

As far as I've come to know, there are five(-ish) major runs of Sonic manga released throughout the franchise's history. The three-volume Story Comic (1991), the various Shogakukan manga series (1992-1994), Dash & Spin: Chousoku Sonic (2002-2005), the various Dengeki Nintendo DS manga (2008-2013), and The Jet Black Hedgehog (2024-2025). There are a few others that could be mentioned, like that Sonic Comic webseries from 2016 or the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Mega Drive Koushiki Guidebook, but those are the big ones. Of all of them, however, the Dengeki Nintendo DS Sonic manga are the only ones that remain poorly archived (assuming there aren't 4-koma littered through magazines that no one has documented yet—more on this later).

For the uninitiated, the manga serialized in Dengeki Nintendo DS was originally based on and intended to promote the, at time time, upcoming Sonic World Adventure (Unleashed). I've heard that these were scanned and translated into English at one point, but I've only been able to find up to chapter 2 of the translation. After seven issues, the manga would change focus, instead revolving around Sonic and the Black Knight. This would happen again three more times, with Sonic Chronicles, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations all receiving adaptations. There are a very few of these issues scanned and available online—only Sonic Generations is complete. As of my writing this, 29 issues still need archived. Just about all of what I could find is kept on the site Random Hoo Haas (among a great many other video game manga), and it has been an invaluable resource.

Fortunately, all other relevant issues of Dengeki Nintendo DS are held in the National Diet Library (NDL)'s collections. With a Simple Account through the NDL's search page, one can actually pay to have articles (or manga, in this case) photoduplicated and mailed to them. This seems to be how, back in 2021, this group on Free Scribes of Mobius was able to get scans of the Sonic manga from the Shogakukan Learning Journals. However, starting last February, an Official Account will also allow the user to pay and receive photoduplications as downloadable PDFs. Official Accounts do require submitting a scanned photo-ID, but both kinds of accounts are free to make.

To photoduplicate, the NDL requires just the name of the magazine, the title, the author, and the volume. However, the library does require that the article be listed in the table of contents—this poses a potential problem. Every issue has its cover and table of contents scanned and viewable on retromags.com, which is great for cross-referencing information. However, it also reveals that, between April 2009 and September 2010, the page numbers for manga are not listed on the contents pages. I was fortunately able to request the first of these that I could not find elsewhere, August 2009 (see list), with no problems, but I still figured it was worth mentioning in case the NDL refuses to scan other ones for this table of contents anomaly. Assuming smooth sailing though, this would mean all missing manga from Dengeki Nintendo DS can be scanned.

The only other point that I have been unable to grapple with is the 4-koma. I've read in a few places including Random Hoo Haas that, while the manga for Sonic Generations ends in the April 2012 issue, the magazine gets renamed to Dengeki Nintendo for Kids and continues to feature Sonic 4-komas until May 2013. I don't know what the original source for this information is. Furthermore, I don't know if the NDL would be willing to search for them, if they do exist.
(Not regarding Dengeki Nintendo, but Random Hoo Haas also lists some 4-koma that was interspersed with Dash & Spin that I've not seen anywhere else. Like the site says, they aren't listed on the contents page, so there really doesn't seem to be a way to find them without checking each magazine. There is a blog here by Vertekins with some 4-komas, but I honestly don't know how to sort it out in any systematic way.)

There are likely still loads of things I don't know about the Dengeki Nintendo DS Sonic manga, but I intend to chip away at purchasing scans whenever I have excess funds. I thought it might be worthwhile to put this all out there though (and rip off Pengi's Shogakukan Sonic Manga Index thread from years ago), in case I've missed something or someone has magazines to scan. Like I mentioned before, I'm fairly sure this is the last Sonic-related manga to need archiving, so it'd be cool to finally read them all.

Here is the list as it stands right now:

All were authored and illustrated by Makoto Hirono (広の まこと) (at least until 4-koma—still uncertain)

As previously mentioned, the 4-komas have bewildered me thus far. I've included the issues of Dengeki Nintendo for Kids that some are purported to be in below, though I don't know much more than that. At least one is archived in translation on Vertekins's blog, though out of context. Here is the link to the first Dengeki Nintendo for Kids magazine on retromags.com.

Thanks for the overview. Never heard of NDL, but it sounds like an incredible service!

I'm a wee bit surprised there don't seem to be many scans of Dengeki Nintendo online. Finding scans of the whole mag would be like killing two birds with one stone, since Dengeki Nintendo (not just the comics) technically falls under the scope of both, Sonic Retro and Sega Retro.

Somehow this thing has become like one of the golden fetch quests for SR as a whole. Here's to hoping that later this year someone manages to digitise Dengeki Nintendo's issues

At the time, my wife (at time girlfriend) and I got almost all issues with Dengeki Sonic Manga because there´s a Japanese book store here that I requested to bring them every month. 43 of 44 chapters and 3 issues 4-kome.

    The problems:

    - She don´t want to dismantle the magazines to scan the manga. But we got duplicates.
    - I don´t have a working scanner at the moment.
    - Time to scan them all because of my constant work.

But I want to scan all this material and share when is possible. At the moment isn´t =/ I still want to convince her to dismantle the magazines because they got a lot of space. The duplicates starts on Chapter 13, which is Sonic Chronicles manga.

wiki stuff... and a beer... or two... or more...
I happened to know about that website of the National Diet Library (because I stumbled across it a while ago when I was looking for some stuff for Sega Retro)... and if a work is in the public domain, you can download it completely free of charge (but that usually only happens with publications that are over a hundred years old, like this book here)...
