It just adds credence to my theory that Daytona have probably asked Sega to make the game "more like real NASCAR" - Because we all know: The reason anyone plays Daytona is because it's just like real NASCAR. I really need to stop being cynical. This could be everything we've wanted for years, but lets face it - The longer you wait for something, the more likely you'll be disappointed once it comes. Nothing ever lives up to years of dreamy anticipation.
Honestly I'm surprised Daytona haven't asked Sega to make this one more realistic and modern, in particular the music which they (I assume) attempted to brush under he rug for being too cheesy with the western version of Daytona 2. Also the Hornet car returning instead of being replaced with some licensed cars and/or drivers is an interesting surprise. It's still campy and colourful enough for me, personally, though yeah I would have liked to have seen more 'new' and less direct-remake to it. I'm going to be off to EAG International in London in January so I'm hoping they'll have a closer to final build of the game there to play. Newer but familiar graphics and half new and half old tracks: call it Daytona Mania :P
But if that were the case, they'd probably push for the speedway to at least have the correct shape, surely? Y'know, a rounded pentagon, instead of a rounded triangle. Probably not take a full 40 seconds to go around (or if it did, it'd only be like 4-5 laps, max), but the idea'd be about the same. It'd also make the inclusion of Three-Seven Speedway more meaningful.
New Daytona sounds great to me! I agree that it currently looks a bit lacking, but the game is a long way off, and is clearly in beta so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. From the first impressions it sounds like they've been mainly concerned about getting the feel of the driving and racing right, so they can presumably now spend a reasonable amount of time polishing up the aesthetics. Even the music sounds like an early demo at the moment. If this ever gets a home release, I can't wait for it to be pulled from everywhere 2 years later when SEGA loses the licence.
Daytona never got delisted from PSN/XBLA as far as I know, it's been up since 2011. New footage of Three Seven Speedway, with someone playing that knows what they're doing, and you can see the sonic mountain! Even the victory lane scene looks shot for shot identical barring the lack of the staff photo.
Well, that's that then, the previous video is clearly Daytona (although, the high banking and long straights should've given that away to anyone familiar with the track) and the track map in the menu is inaccurate - the track itself is scaled down to make it more fun, something I knew they'd end up doing, because let's face it -- this series isn't known for 40 second draftfest laps, it's known for goofy arcade fun. Three Seven Speedway looks like a full of life, modern version of the track from 20 years ago, which I dig. I do love that the automatic transmission car is based on the classic Hornet stock car whilst the manual transmission is clearly based on the NASCAR Gen 6. Neat, pointless detail that I can get into.
I hope this can get Daytona 1+2 HD to happen, especially on Steam...if there's no chance of a port of 3 any time soon I'd at least settle for those two games to get updated. Game looks okay so far, and I hope the D&B out here in Orlando gets it.
New trailer for three seven speedway. Also the title has been changed to Daytona Championship USA. I'm going to be playing this at EAG International today, I'll let you know how it goes!
While it's awesome to see classic SEGA games brought back, I just hope this receives a console port down the line, as otherwise I may not ever play it. I can think of one arcade in my city, and it's a bit pants, and entirely Namco (Yet there's not even chuffing Pac-Man?!?!)
Something seems a little awkward with that Modern Sonic cliff-side sculpture...Maybe I'm just used to the classic model being there?
Don't quote me on this, but I heard from somewhere that the docs for the cabinet mention Nintendo in places...Switch port maybe? Or possibly confusion with the new Cruis'n game (which isn't nearly as good looking because, well, Cruis'n wasn't that great)
I love the way that rather than address the relative blandness of the game compared to Daytona 2, they've increased the blandness by dropping the "3" from the title. This should be Daytona USA 3: Hyper Explosion Edition and we should be racing on the moon. It's the next logical step - come on lads.
Played it. Yep this is more of a remake than a sequel guys, but I'm pretty ok with that if it means Daytona will be back in arcades. This build had the two easy and two medium tracks so dinosaur canyon is back in. The dead end where you lose your sponsors appeared to be blocked off / EDIT: Turns out I was mistaken! It's still there. Will be going to EAG again tomorrow so will get on it some more. They gave out Daytona is Back stickers and water bottles haha. Also we posed with a trophy for Sega and just as they snapped the photo I accidentally snapped one of the handles off! I hope they put their photos up on Facebook soon as they caught the very moment it happened haha. They were also cool with us filming whatever we wanted despite still not being a complete build. I got to see it crash and reboot into windows 7 hehe.
If it crashed into Windows 7 then it's on PC hardware, port confirmed :v: (this is a joke but I wouldn't be surprised if it popped up on Steam like a year or so later)
To be fair a lot of modern arcade machines run on Windows PCs, saw Star Wars Battle Pod crash to Windows XP once. Here's me at the event today, before the trophy breaking incident..
While the game footage looks great, it's a real shame that the game has dropped the 3 moniker and has reverted into an enhanced remake of the first game.
Well that's all it ever was, so it makes sense to not call it Daytona 3. Maybe SEGA realised that doing a rehash of past ideas with a new coat of paint in a beloved classic IP and then calling it a numbered sequel wasn't a good idea. Guess that means they're learning =P
