    Working on my art!
^ They could have done so much more with Generations script. I wanted to see cutscenes from older games, only redone. They could fuck with the time paradox and what not. Since Modern Sonic knows everything is coming he won't be surprised, he could have been a dick and spoil alerted everything. Just imagine him going back to the cutscene where he first met Shadow, or going back to Hidden Palace and encountering Robotnik stealing the master emerald, or going back to Sonic Heroes and pointing out how it's actually Metal Sonic they're fighting. He could have fucked with their minds. Granted, in order for this to have happened, classic Robotnik, and classic and Modern Tails would likely not have been a major part of the plot, since they'd likely encounter them in cutscenes. But I would have been just fine with that.

3D underwater sounds like a recipe for disaster.

    How So?

It could work if the environment for it is designed well.

Speaking of which, what do you think of Deep Sea Zone from SRB2? That's a 3D water level, more or less.

Really late, and possibly somewhat off-topic, but wanted to confirm this.

I'm drawing something, not that you'll ever see it.
Deep Sea Zone was a decent level, I loved some parts of it. But it was extremely frustrating, more so than any 2D water level I've ever played IMO.

Well, 3D controls are already hard to get right. Water levels generally demand sluggish controls which is a large part of the frustration. Both of them together is akin to crossing the beams.

I always thought that the most frustrating part of it was actually that above-water section where you were trying to break through all those blocks and are more or less running around like an idiot for several minutes because you can't see where you're going. I don't know who thought leaving that in was a good idea. Come to think of it, a lot of the non-water gimmicks in that stage were more frustrating than actually being underwater.

Anyway, back to talking about the underwater part. Perhaps the underwater sections should be streamlined or flattened? It was always insanely frustrating falling all the way down to a lower level and having to climb back up, although there were usually springs to get you to where you needed to go.

I just think water levels in most Sonic games aren't very well made or enjoyable, but if they were got right, we'd have really nice levels and there would be less people who hate water with a passion (especially Labyrinth from Sonic 1, I've seen lots of negative opinions about it).

First off, we can't say underwater controls are a bad thing in themselves. At least IMO, they were kinda OK in the Advance games and Generations. It's just slightly different physics that we must get used to like many other things.

Next, about scenery: who wouldn't want a beach or a cavern with a lively underwater environment such as coloured fish, corals, sunken ships, giant nautili (background, or even foreground!). This is where Aquarium Park shines over Seaside Hill and its white temple walls. Also, things like the rising water room in modern chemical plant with broken canisters in the background give a rather nice rush feeling and an excellent decorative effect.

Finally, water should NEVER be associated with nasty things like long claustrophobic corridors, spears, bottomless pits, huge beds of spikes... much better keeping these to a minimum/to challenge levels in favour of more fun gimmicks; which could include a powerup that allows temporary swimming (like in Tidal Plant Zone), controlling the water level to move floating platforms or to give variety to the level depending of if it's flooded or not, or even to unlock hidden paths... And let's not forget the well known currents and pipes, of course!

Second to winter levels, I thing water is one of the tropes I like the most in Sonic games.

One of Sonic's staples is that he doesn't swim. even if you change everything about a sonic game, at least keep true to one thing: that he doesn't swim.
In the Wii version of Colors, he can "pretty much swim" and it 1) made me mad and 2) made the water levels really easy.

    It's not dead yet?

    Technically?

Well, I mean, it's rotting and making funny noises, but at least it's moving, right?
