Concept Art & Mockups - Aquatic Ruin Mockups Needed!!

    They wouldn't have used 4x4 blocks for that... Just single pixels or vertical lines, like everywhere else.

    Do you all recall that one mockup of the palm tree that had the distinct leaves along with some translucent area in between the leaves?

    That's what I would expect this to look like. The transparent areas in-between ought to have some level of translucent green to it, I think.

    I've tried to edit the latest palmtree to reflect that, but I haven't been able to make the leaves translucent without affecting the branches themselves... =\

    Adding more contrast on green with a faint transparent effect may do the trick.

    To be honest, it looks to me just like a bunch of Christmas trees thrown together, and looks *nothing* like the original - only apart from the shape and colour, and that's about it.

    IMO, I would at least make the 'leaves' smaller and a little more uniform, more like the original sprite is.

    Pretty much, but it's obvious that it's just a hasty Photoshop brush slapped together as proof of concept, as he stated. That is, however, much more along the lines of what I was thinking in the creative license department. I'd definitely like to see a more refined (and non PS-brush preset) design based on this.

    I think he's right actually. The difference is with vertical lines they were trying to get an even looking transparency, with this offset pattern it makes the surface uneven and therefore gives the 'appearance' of being patchy, as a shrubbery would appear if it was thin on leaves.

    I don't think going with the plain scaled pixels are a good idea to be honest. Especially when you've added detail to the palm trees and the small animals to make it clearer what they are.

    It shouldn't be too difficult for anybody with 3D knowledge to make a globe with those proportions, apply a checkered texture and add some shines and shading.

    Anybody? Please?

    He's right, it wouldn't be difficult to do, and I'd be glad to do it. At the moment I'm swamped for work in my 3D classes though, so if someone else is available to run with this please speak up. If not, I'll get around to it, just can't guarantee when.

    Maybe something like this? Maybe with an alpha map added or something, maybe bump mapping? (I made this really quickly).

    Nice attempt - the dark/light pixels look too random. If their arrangement were uniform, like a chess board, it might look a little better.

    I know the colors are kind of messed up and the shading needs to be more cartooney, but I don't have a lot of time to work on it right now. ;)

    Please showcase that as a PNG with a white background.

    The dark background makes it hard to see the green colours, and there's also a lot of distortion in that jpg.

    I really like that one. The only gripe I have with it is that it's a lot darker/flat-shaded compared to the original.

    I like that 3D one, but I would add squares sticking out so its not completely round like the original. And yeah make the texture a lighter green.
