Hey, I made that in less than half a minute. =(

The original was like that, and we weren't adding new frames until now, so I thought it would fit.

    Fuck the original.

God damn it guys, stop being such a pussy about updating some shit. Maverick Hunter X and Mega Man Powered Up weren't awesome remakes because they were the exact same game. Street Fighter II HD isn't gaining attention because it's just a graphical update of SSF2T. Bionic Commando Rearmed isn't awesome because I'm playing Bionic Commando with polygons.

    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
    Indeed.

Before any art was started, ideally quality remakes should have been researched into and looked at, analysed to see what they did wrong or right. For example, Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X is a much better remake than something like Bubble Bobble Revolution, because it's very faithful. On the other end of the scale, we have Mega Man Powered Up was a very unconservative remake, totally changing the 'feel' of the game entirely with Super Street Fighter II HD coming somewhere in the middle, making well-informed, well-judged changes as and where they are fit.

Even pseudo-remakes such as CastleVania Chronicles (The X68000 update, but I suppose you could include the recent PSP one) are worthy of note, because these are all examples of how a professional company would have done it. Not convinced, because it's not Sega? Simply check out what Sega have done -- although most of it sucks (Admittedly) the Sega Ages series does have some highlights - Phantasy Star II's character sprites are lovely, and Golden Axe's soundtrack is even pretty good, doing a more than reasonable job of recreating the original sounds with a full orchestra behind it, including some embellishments not actually found in the original music. And, of course, the mighty OutRun 2006: Coast to Coast is pretty much a "how-it-should-be-done" update in my book.

I know how much it's hated round these here parts, but the phrase originalpixelfag was borne out of the frustration at your collectively conservative approach to this remake; just give it some thought at least, huh?

    ...Yup. We already have.

That's why we proposed the improved static on the monitors in the first place.

Flare's improved Emerald Hill backgrounds with added details...

The Emerald Hill grass that improves upon the original sprite...

And the CG ring made by Blue Streak.

All examples of going beyond the original artwork.

Yup, it's a community project. If you want to do that research and contribute, by all means, please feel free to do so.

Okay, here's the thing—the "improved" static... doesn't look that good. The problem is that you're subjecting everyone to an arbitrary effect that is not universally interpreted as "better." I like ICEknight's effect because it doesn't hurt my eyes, distort my view of the powerup, and is not completely overexaggerated—however, despite this, it's still not true to the original intentions of the effect. The effect was less to appear as an outright staticy television, but rather to flash quickly and give the powerup a "holographic" appearance, to actually convince the player in some form that it was a television, and not some other type of device. It's like a fake transparency, really.

I don't like how you completely blew off Jay's post, either. This is not as clean-cut as you're playing it off to be. Unless you have a better way of achieving the original intended effect, then neither Woot's, nor anyone else's interpretation is correct (or good looking, for that matter). This is why I originally suggested to make a basic effect now and explore the aesthetics of these flashing monitors later, but I was kindly blown off in the same manner Jay was just blown off, despite being entirely respectful in expressing my views.

I just explained very clearly to Jay that our "collectively conservative approach" as he put it, is simply untrue. It's something that is easily repeated but actually has very little truth value. Which is why I highlighted very clearly the artwork that contradicts his statement. I admit I was a little curt with him, but I'm getting a little fed up of him continually repeating it.

I would have thought that all the artwork and concepts that have been produced recently would have made this quite obvious by now.

The forums had been very quiet recently, which is why I suggested exploring some different aesthetics for the monitor. There's no harm in new contributors testing their talents and exploring different effects - it doesn't at all detract from our main staff's remastering of the tiles. I don't remember you being dismissed either Tweaker, it's just that work is pressing on with the project.

    How's this?:

Unanimated. Blurry with scanlines, because you wouldn't expect an image on a TV to have the same sharpness as "real" objects like Sonic.

Animated. (Bear in mind it may not run perfectly in a browser).

That looks incredibly well done to me. Not sure if I like it more than the previous versions posted, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

To get past the whole thing of 'these are just the concepts, let's shelve them until the final forms are complete', why not add certain concepts to the project goals section? Seems to me like it would solve at least one problem, if not more.

The Current Project Targets have the specification of "some art needing mockups", but mind that topic is mainly a communication of what "we quickly need" completed, due our strict schedule, so we intend it to be pretty basic.

Or you mean a different mockup-->final art process?
Please explain better your idea on the Project Feedback and General Discussion Topic, I really like any good suggestion! ;)

I went for the ultra-realistic scanline approach, but it ended up looking like a scanner :3

Done and done. What we're seeing with the current crop of monitor art stands out as a good opportunity to experiment with its implementation.

Understanding the original? Imagine if the Sonic 3 special stage floor art was texture mapped onto a sphere, and that said sphere had one of those colors as an alpha channel. The shading is supposed to be reminiscent of the blue / red / yellow spheres in that stage.

Man... This is the obvious thing, like, we have to analise this while playing it on an old TV... I don't know o.o

What about combining it with Hive's scanline monitor then - so putting these two together
