I've got to say that as far as an evolution of Sonic's design goes, Unleashed's model (and Brawl's for that matter) is quite nice. Personally I thought they went a little overboard with the sidemouth in cutscenes (dat face), but overall, I agree that it obtains a cartoony atmosphere in a 3D environment. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a cel-shaded rendition one of these days...

Oh, and on the subject of Mario not changing in design...

Current design Mario is taller, has longer and thinner limbs, is less pudgy, and has a lower body-to-head ratio, not to mention a total switch of shirt and overalls color. Coincidence, or simply a change in the accepted design of the time period?

I personally agree that the attitude is what really kills Sonic now as opposed to Sonic then. Mario has always acted like Mario, after all.

Mario had some slight revisions but none to the point where people say Classic Mario and Modern Mario. Not to mention the extreme pudgy Mario would just look awful in 64.

But then again you linked to Super Mario USA, a game that isn't even an actual Mario game to begin with.

Both Land and World had slimmer and thinner Mario.

I vote for the classic sonic design. It has that cutesy classic anime feel to it, back before anime wasn't trendy overseas and the internet had no public face.

As far as his character developement came about, he really didn't need much, definately not as much as they ended up giving him anyway. I mean, he was mute, he had that nintendo thing going where the player would put themselves in his place... His entire personality was in his expressions and gestures. He taps his foot and crosses his arm cuz he's impatient, he wags his finger and flashes V signs when he's being cocky, and he does that Bruce Lee nose wipe thing. Simple and subtle little things that were pretty cool, but vague enough that you couldn't draw very many conclusions about the kind of character that he is. You wouldn't need to anyway, thinking about plot and depthy character developement would just slow down his trademark super fast gameplay.

Quoted for the goddamn truth. All of it. Sonic OVA is easily my favorite presentation of the Sonic universe and Sonic himself, and your points about Eggman/Dr. Robotnik are spot on. I think he was great in Unleashed until he was flicked off, ONCE AGAIN, losing his final boss status. When is that trend going to end? It feels like he's nothing but a side character with horrible luck lately.

So I take it you are into Robotnik as a harmless horn-dog more so than Robotnik as a serious villain? If so, I agree.

Well, he shouldn't be HARMLESS, or else he'll end up like he did in Unleashed. I guess more like he was in the OVA, only not afraid to get all SatAM if he's pushed a TAD too far. He shouldn't lean completely toward 'goofy sandwich eating fat man' or 'heartless tyrant who wants to roboticize everything', they should mix.

And now I probably sound like I'm trying to write fanfiction or something. My apologies.

No, you really don't sound like you're writing fanfiction. That sounds just about right for Eggman to be that way.

Unleashed is definitely Eggman's best appearance in a modern Sonic game. The fleet of carriers near the beginning, screwing Sonic over, eating a sammich, getting teased by his own robot, his dialogue ("Hoho, I've been waitin' a looong time for this!")... it was all great, except for getting shafted once again as the final boss.

Actually, I think it was Sonic's best too (when the sun was up, anyway). He was mostly calm and he kept his mouth shut for most cutscenes.

...and whenever he did open his mouth, he had something at least somewhat cool to say. Sonic was done alright in Unleashed, I suppose, but he still was lacking the buttholish attitude he had in the OVA that made him shine. Sure, this was the return of his cocky nature in full play, but I have yet to see him stop being a goody two-shoes as he always is nowadays and actually be Sonic again.

And actually I think did really good in Unleashed, but in Adventure 2 (no matter that the story was mediocre) Eggman was really on a roll in that game, although he was a little too dark and edgy. Eggman should be goofy, but still be very menacing.

In other words, think of it like this: Eggman is an evil Santa Claus. He's a big, rotund old man with unbelievable facial hair, a red suit, and a tendency to laugh.. alot. It's just that while Santa gives you stuffed animals, Eggman takes away real animals. And while Santa makes toys to play with, Eggman makes toys to kill. Simple as that. :colbert:

Now if only he'd keep his mouth shut during the levels.

I think Eggman had a lot of goofiness in SA2, for example, being cocky while breaking into GUN, scratching his head in bewilderement at Rouge and Knuckles, scratching his arse for no reason, waving at the heroes in the pyramid, his whole advertisement in national TV screams camp... I suppose he was far more determined and therefore far more dangerous in SA2, but I don't think he sacrificed his goofy side to achieve it. I can't see his SatAM counterpart doing any of this.

You know, I think Sonic Team had that in mind when they created Robotnik, especially with the "Oh, ho ho!" laughter from Sonic CD. You know, from Metallic Madness Bad Future and the Game Over jingle. Even Robotnik himself says he resembles Santa Claus in AoSTH, but that depends on what canon you follow.
