EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: This topic was about the unveiling of the Sonic 2 production sketches, which could be accessed after clearing the "click the Buzz Bomber" minigame at Sonic Database.
This is even worse than turd language. I can't understand it. I thought ICEknight was all against Time Travel theories?
A badnik from your prototype manual? Gah I can't be bothered to even try and work it out it'll be in the Sonic DB update :P
Hmm, an ingenious update which raises some interesting questions, and gives some insight into very early into the development process of Sonic 2. Interesting that it seems Time Travel was probably planned at an early stage of development after all. I knew that image you had in your SCARZ avatar was Mother Bubbler concept art. =P EDIT:And, for those of you who couldn't work it out (everyone who's posted so far but me, it seems), this is ICEknight hinting that the Sonic Database has now been updated with some new stuff; namely Sonic 2 Production sketches. =P The whole 'turd language' thing you would understand if you'd seen the update, since the name of the enemy he's displaying, "BANPER" is Engrishified "BUMPER". Now go fight some more wasps, people.
Running DEJAP.EXE... Configuring parameter space... Reticulating splines... Translation, major point form: 1. Banpers (the wiggling hyperactive thingy) are thrown by the crab. 2. Bubblers are thrown by Mother Bubbler. 3. There is a lost frog enemy (possibly this one?). Fish and Bee were kept. (Bee can throw fire logs.) 4. Snail runs at Sonic and blows up. P.S. It's easier to look at the game javascript and grab the URL than to play the game. :P
I beat 4 wasps without any prizes. Anyway, the Ball enemy looks like it was intended to be in Chemical Plant, instead of those blue worms maybe?
And ICEknight! The "s pos 16 32 48" means sprite position for the 4 cells in the sprite pattern table. EDIT: Sand crab makes sence now. Why would a crab be in Casino Night anyway?
No! Only Sonic 2's manual! It was probably Oshima that did the art in Sonic 1's manual, or Yasuhara himself.
To clarify that a little for you: 1. The design for 'Banper' seems to have evolved into the 'Sandcrab' design you show there (which is a precursor to the 'Crawl' enemy from the final). There is no second enemy name / description on that sheet, and the 'Sandcrab' sketches (waaay down the page underneath a partially erased 'neat' design for 'Banper') are portrayed as having the same effects as 'Banper'. I'd presume it's just an evolution of the design. 2. 'Bubblers' actually rise from the sparks thrown by 'Mother Bubbler', as previously detailed by Tom Payne and now as shown in these concept designs. Both are portrayed as being in the 'Chemical Factory Zone' setting, which seems to be the concept design for 'Chemical Plant'. 3. The 'Bee' was intended to have the ability to set the log bridges on fire, not to throw fire logs. (Incidentally, ICEknight, some speculation here, but couldn't 'Fish 1' have possibly been the lost Fish enemy that was found in our prototype? It's an interesting thought, though one we most likely will never get an answer to...) 4. Yes. XD Though the concepts originally show it as rolling. Also interesting to note is that in the concepts they are shown as being in 'Hill Top'...
Chemical Factory is too big for the Genesis sprite offset space. That's why it got renamed to Chemical Plant. As for Time Travel. OH NOS! We were right all along in the old theories.
Yeah, I also think it's very possible that it's the diagonal piranha... But perhaps it was "Fish 3", who knows. =|
Yeah, looks like the old magazines weren't confusing things (much) after all. But anyway, it looks like the idea was scrapped even before the definitive bumper enemy was designed, as the crab doesn't have an alternate design or anything.
Yamaguchi's Mother Bubbler got cancled by someone, but he kept the idea when he moved on to work with Sonic CD in 1993, and the result became the Collision Chaos bat.
