Archie Sonic Comic Megathread

Oh God, I knew the artwork on that cover was reminding me of another artist. Dem spaghetti legs.

I will say that I like Bunnie's redesign. Nicole's is alright but I need a better picture that's NOT the variant cover. Antoine's is still kinda crap. =/

 

...Who does Archie hire for variants? Do they just take anyone? That style does not jive with Sonic at all.

But at least we get another shot of Nicole's new threads.

 

Antoine looks like tanned Tails with a wig on that cover.

NICOLE looks a lot more like her old form, but that new attire still looks ripped off Blaze's.

I kinda wish that artists understood the difference between 'making characters uniform with an franchise's design style' and 'turning all the cast into mish mashes of existing ones'.

 

That variant cover's a doozy, but I dunno if I dislike it more than the main series covers from around the 150s when Spaz was focusing on Sonic X. At least in this one Sonic looks like Sonic and not like a blob with melting quills.

I can't even tell that's a target in the background since Sonic and Mina are covering almost all of it.

In this one Sonic plays the Wicked Witch of the Westside Island.

This next one's an improvement, but what the fuck is Sally on and where can I get some.


Oh my God, I just realized it's been 100 issues since then.

 

Oh god. Why did you have to remind me those covers existed?

If it helps any, the guy who drew those also did Mega Man #18's cover, and that one's pretty nice. I guess he just sucks at drawing Sonic characters.

 

Yeah, I feel like those old covers had some great coloring and solid linework, but the simplicity of Sonic and pals doesn't really lend itself well to an assortment of styles. Not as much so as more 'realistic' heroes like Superman or Batman anyway.

As for the MM cover, Sanford has certainly improved over the years, but sticking to model is important with licensed characters and Protoman's misshapen helmet makes him look like an X-Men villain.

 

Protoman looks fine, but MegaMan in the background has some serious anatomical issues and derp-age going on. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's probably the kind of artist that is good with realistically proportioned humans, but when it comes to stylized characters like Sonic and MegaMan, he just can't pull it off.

Seriously, what's going on with everyone's head/necks in that variant cover.

 

Universe and Mega Man solicits are up. (Do we have a Mega Man comic thread? Might as well include the Mega Man one here in the meantime if we don't)

Seeing the variant to 255 made me wonder why Archie didn't just get the guy who made the Evil Friends Forever variants to do the variant for 255. It would look a lot better than what we have.

 

Said guy was already an artist on the Mega Man comic, did the fourth issue of the crossover (since the planned artist fell ill), and is actually the one who did the character redesigns for the comic post-crossover.

Apparently preview pages for 252 showed up somewhere on Facebook. Not sure if I'm allowed to link them because I don't think they're official, and I wasn't able to view them without a Facebook account anyway, but someone did put up a summary of what they show:

So, basically, [inlinespoiler]it seems the Genesis World and Mobius Prime have got mixed together, but Sonic completely remembers the normal timeline as it should be (I wouldn't be surprised if Eggman does too), and Naugus (called Wally for some reason) remembers some of it suddenly. I actually had a feeling it might end up going this way, with Sonic remembering off the bat and others remembering over time.[/inlinespoiler] And you know what? I'm pretty okay with that.

Hopefully we're not going AGAIN through "Snively is Eggman's snivelling sidekick who wants to betray him!", Orbot and Cubot can fill the sidekick role.

Naugus has a tail since as it turns out, the Ixis part was introduced by, guess who! Starts with a P and ends in an S and rhymes with Benders.

So they're apparently reverting him to his SatAM design, where he DID have a tail.
