Archie Sonic Comic Megathread

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by Dark Sonic, Jan 27, 2011.

  1. CALLED IT!

Hope this leads to an eventual Sonic/TMNT crossover. Also hope the old talent gets their jobs back. Overall this is a good move.

IDW is a good publisher, and from how things are worded in the press release, they want to bring on as much of the old talent as possible. GOOOD

  3. I think IDW can do some cool things. I guess we'd be saying goodbye to the Freedom Fighters though

While I was too injured to actually attend SDCC (wow, giving up a free hotel and badge RIP) I can only imagine behind closed doors SEGA holds a contest between publishers to get a high score in a Sonic game to win the publishing rights. Unless Sega has just been leaving Archie in the dark or vice versa because this deal has been in the oven for some time now. Good for Sega and IDW. Don't think I'll pick it back up though.

Somehow not surprised by this, but not grinding my teeth in anger too. maybe because it was a short formal announcement and not a "hey know that old thing? fuck that thing! heres a new thing!! BUY IT!!!" type of announcement.

I think it's alittle too soon to start doing a fiesta on top of Archie!Sonic's grave but whatever, 40% of the fanbase is happy now.

Well, if this had to happen, I'm glad it happened this way. IDW seems like they're on the ball, and they've acknowledged they're trying to to make fans happy as well. Ian and crew might also be able to transition over to the new comic, too.

Is there something I missed somewhere? I'm pretty sure the most we know is that the Mega Man comic is on indefinite hiatus.

So... should we rename this thread to "IDW Sonic Comic Megathread" or just leave it as it is?

Probably best to start a new thread and close this one. The Archie era is over.

As for this, sounds like good news. They seem to be a respectable publisher and announcing the news so quickly was a good move. Optimistic about this.

Might as well rename it! My threads being deleted, so I have an archive of it here! The Archive of Unneeded thread But I still wonder if the freedom fighters will return, will they?

Ya we can probably start a new thread later. Once we start getting solicits for the IDW comics, or any concrete news outside of "comics are coming," then we can start a new thread.

For now this one serves as a good transition topic, a memorial of the old and a celebration/speculation of the new.

  13. Well, they didn't. I guess I shouldn't assume that

I think FoS was theorizing/assuming that IDW would probably start everything over and without Sally and the Freedom Fighters. Granted, we only just had the series officially cancelled and then IDW picking up the license; there is not a single word yet of whether it'll be entirely new, much less the style, tone or otherwise it'd go for under IDW. Considering what IDW's got, though, in comparison to Archie, so long as SEGA lets them do so I can imagine a darker approach to the Sonic vs. Eggman battles just as much as I can see something in the vein of Ian Flynn's snarktastic and self-aware mix of lightheartedness with surprise creepy.

Eh, maybe. I expect a continuity reset, but the Freedom Figthers 'are' still popular characters so anything is possible. It depends on if SoJ/SoA want the comic to be more game-canon centric or more of just is content to let it be whatever it wants to be.

Even if the Freedom Fighters do survive, we're still likely seeing a reboot that largely ignores the SATAM history itself for something more original. I'd be shocked if they also continue the current storyline given all the Penders legal problems, though it's not impossible.

Edit: BTW, this is overall good news for Sonic, but I am kind of sad we didn't at least get one final storyarc to wrap up ArchieSonic. Ending after the Unleashed arc isn't terrible, though.

  16. The irony of this statement is that Archie used to do TMNT comics as well. I don't think any were made during their run of Sonic though.

And yes, much like Sonic, it was canceled with critical plot points and a major hyped arc being left unfinished. (though at least the last issue felt like a comic ender, unlike Archie Sonic.)

Actually I'd say Archie sonic pretty much wrapped itself up save for Sonic 3 and Overdrive.

Archie Eggman was extremely creepy. Ian nailed Eggman in both universes though.

With a new comic though, SatAM conehead Robotnik will officially no longer exist for sure. RIP conehead Robotnik.

IDW does a lot of cool things with their licenced properties. TMNT and Transformers get a lot of love. It's good to see IDW was the one that grabbed it.

I guess this is why Sega waited so long to announce the death of Archie Sonic? Any news if Ian and co get to be involved? I kind of doubt it, but it'd be nice.

Flynn has stated on his podcast the BumbleKast that the only reason the Freedom Fighters were still being utilized in Archie is because the original contracts for the comic itself was tethered to the SatAM and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog adaptations. He also stated that they were prepared for that plug to be pulled at any moment.

Since IDW is an entirely new contract, there's pretty much no chance we'll ever see the Freedom Fighters again. Flynn also stated in that episode of the podcast that they weren't allowed to touch Sonic X after that series discontinued, nor were they allowed to utilize the OVA, OR Underground. Sega has an issue with their license utilizing discontinued facets. So yeah, the last bastion of SatAM is officially dead.
