Actually SoA does intend to continue the comics, but in a "different direction"... which pretty much means another reboot with a new publisher.

It's adorable how Penders thinks he'll be able to legally reprint those comics, to the point where he's insulting the intelligence of anyone telling him he won't be able to do that. The sooner he falls into obscurity the better, because this trainwreck has been the ONLY thing keeping him relevant.

It actually feels refreshing that we no longer have to care about Archie's incompetence or Penders' vendetta. With the Sonic comics gone out of the way, they can keep arguing and suing each other all they want, for all I care.

I'm sad to see Ian's wordbuilding and characters gone. But I'm hopeful that we might see him working at a new publisher.

I'm not sure whether they'd find one.

They probably wouldn't announce that if they didn't already have someone lined up. They might just be withholding information for the time being. Legal issues aside, it's not like the Sonic Comic would be a cancer on another publisher. In fact the major cancer in this whole ordeal seems to be Archie. Ending things with them was for the best.

It has to be more than coincidence that Sega drops Archie, after 24 years, at basically the same time they reincarnate Classic Sonic. Perhaps Sega is looking to streamline the IP, and trim some fat. Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic, Boom Sonic, Archie Sonic, these are all existing across the media landscape at the same time... Perhaps Sega are seeing the potential in Classic and/or the interest in the Mega Drive variant, and thought this was a good time to consolidate and move forward in a unified direction. I'm actually happy very happy about this. Fingers crossed for a more CD-esque direction (OR who knows, maybe even a Mania-esque direction!)

I assume what he meant was "Boy, I sure do think Sega will strike up a reprint deal with me now that Archie's out of the picture!" but is explaining it really, really poorly. If he's been consistent on anything over the past few years, it's that insulting people comes more naturally to him than making clarifications.

Given Archie's silence for so long and that Sega has made the announcement alone (seriously, NOTHING from a company who's been running one of the longest ever licensed comics - possibly THE longest - for nearly a quarter of a century?!), you have to wonder just who the one is at fault here, and I would pour all the blame on Archie. Everything from the contracts opening the door to Ken "Summon my e'c'y'h'''hd'n''a lawyers" Penders being able to wipe out two decades of continuity, to the sudden ceasing of publishing and a wall of silence, everything points at Archie comics.

Further proof in Sega's post - a "different direction" for the comics, not a goodbye. Given SDCC is imminent and this post being made now, a new run with another publisher is surely inevitable - and if this happens, it proves Sega wants more comics - so why not continue with their quarter-century partner? No reason not to unless something's up.

+ - Sega if you're watching the UK fans would love Fleetway prints now you're free of Archie. Just saiyan

I just really, really hope the last chapter of Overdrive doesn't become lost media and that someone picks it up. :(

  10. It'd be possible, assuming Sega owns the rights to all the Sonic comics.

I wonder who is going to pick up the publishing duties, though. My bet is on either Boom Studios or IDW.

Thank you for you hella high effort and skills, man!

I wanted to keep the faith, but with that much time being passed, the outcome became more and more towards this direction. Was thinking about throwing my hat in and help with the Archie comic if the outcome was different, but that's water under the bridge now. :/

Hopefully there's some sort of closure here.

I'd gotten a few isolated issues for Christmas over the years prior to that arc (Sonic & Knuckles, Mecha Madness) but by the time I was allowed an actual subscription, Heart of the Hedgehog was about where they were at. You nailed it, definitely one of the high points of the series as far as I'm aware. Interested in seeing where popular opinion falls in regards to specific arcs, now that the whole business is done with and we're compelled to mourn what we never really appreciated in its own time.

Coworker just finished organizing his 4.5TB archive of western comics and he gave me a copy a few months ago, so the timing was perfect, honestly. But yeah, the Freedom Fighters are goners, and that's a real shame. Only Tyson could hold my interest in a fresh start without them right now. Fingers crossed, dude!

EDIT: Oh, and on the bright side, Jay Axer posted some vintage production art recently (1, 2). His art has always been The Best of the Bad Years to me, where the artists had complete creative control and could get away with just doodling random background extras. Man was a beast when it came to these group shots, really breathed life into that world. I mean, aren't these guys cool?

I wonder if SEGA is even ready to announce anything at SDCC. Like, some people are predicting it, but, if they're announcing the partnership now, there's no way they've found another publisher by now. Unless it's been over for months and they're just now telling us. Which would be weird, but I guess it is SEGA, we're talking about.

Could also have been contractual reasons for doing so. We've no way to know.

Honestly, this is making me wonder if this is it for Archie as a whole. They're really not doing too well, and they lost Megaman, to boot.

I feel like the world has had enough of hearing about the tales of a 50s red headed teenager who's only interested in boning his sorta girlfriends. I mean how they kept their company alive for so long with that premise along with a guy who likes cheeseburgers is beyond me.

If Archie goes down as a whole then I'll feel at least alittle better about the whole situation.

Probably Archie has more going on than I am aware of, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone pick up one of those digests at the check-out line. Never seen anyone read one either. The sheer waste of paper must be staggering...

RIP, such a shame though. That series was the one that got me into reading comic books.
