Imperfect the game may be, it is NOTHING in comparison with the crap that was Sonic Genesis GBA. You must be on crack or haven't ever played the GBA port. It's almost unplayable. I'm not saying Rebirth is anywhere close to the original, but seriously, comparing it to the worst Sonic travesty ever is really messed up. As it is, Rebirth was playable for me. I had some issues of course, and the physics weren't like the original, but it wasn't nearly as bad as Sonic Genesis.

As it is, Rebirth has a lot of potential. Excellent graphics for sure. Whoever designed the graphics is really professional and talented. I'd love to see them in a Sonic 1 hack or one of the better engines out there. They're some of the finest I've ever seen.

Sound sucks, but I guess you could simply replace some sound files with your own songs. So not much to bitch about that. Or maybe I'm wrong. Cutscenes aren't very great either. The pinnacle of story telling in a Sonic game was seen in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. All character miming ala Lego Star Wars (sort of) and no text. If you're going to do cutscenes, don't make the characters talk, make it short, and use ingame sprite gestures. You'd be surprised how well that works. And I think Sonic 1 or Sonic 2 would work well with a bit of that kind of story telling!

Overall, it's Hez that made this right? I applaud you, and wish you the best. You've got some talent, so don't let it get you down. Just revamp the engine, pay close attention to the original physics engine in Sonic 1, and either scrap the cutscenes or use the ingame engine with simple Sonic 3/Knuckles gestures. No text would be awesome. Sonic and his pals were never meant to talk IMO. The music needs some work too. I'd just use the original music, or at least have an option for it. Don't give up, I'm sure you can make this great. It could be one of the best fan games ever with some tweaking and polish! As it is now, diamond in the rough. Granted, a lot of polish needed, but you can do it!

Sonic Genesis didn't have the first boss become invincible, kill me, and then have me die continually on respawning until losing all my lives. Were I to WANT to continue with it, I could.

On second thought? That's a feature Sonic Genesis needed. Reliably. Protect the curious from themselves.

Hez is doing Sonic Classic. Sonic Classic is badass. This isn't Sonic Classic, as evident from its nonexistent badassitude.

I see, I thought he was taking credit there. Lol, woops. I still think this is infinitely better than Sonic Genesis, and I never encountered the bug you stated. Sonic Genesis had a better bug for the boss- Jump on him and you can get above him and keep hitting on top without ever getting in harms way. Instant kill, pathetic.

I played this at the last SAGE, and reviewed it. I remember being impressed by the sprites, but little else. I was mostly disappointed by the lack of certain objects (such as Caterkiller - I mean, what's up with that?) which made it feel lazy and unfinished. The music, too, was awful, and some of the revamped graphics - which seem to be "selling point" - totally fucked up the feel of the levels (I'm looking at you, Moonlight Starlight Zone!)

BTW, I checked out Sonic Classic on the wiki. It looks awesome.

So, I decided to give my thoughts on this, seeing as I did link to a download of it earlier.

I like the art of the levels. The overhaul in graphics and the little extra touches are a nice and welcome addition.
I don't like the music at all. The midis aren't too good and the menu music was so bad I really felt I couldn't continue to play if it was any indication to go by.
The physics weren't up to scratch either. Momentum was all over the place (typical fan game problem, I hear) and the spindash, although being a nice addition, would have been better as a toggle in the options, like Sonic Jam.
The bottom path of the second half of Green Hill doesn't exist. At all. I came down the quater pipe and there was no brake away platforms and no section underneath. For it trying to be so accurate, you'd think they'd ensure a whole pathway wasn't missed.

And I finally managed to complete it... after a problem that came up about 6 times. Basically, I recommend anyone who wants to complete it "not" to press the first switch in SBZ1. If you do and go in the teleporter, you get stuck. And you have to restart the whole program to fix it.
Another 1 time glitch like this was in SBZ2, on the cogs you can run on. I ran and jumped onto one from a distance and got stuck. I could jump, but only straight up and down and couldn't move left or right to get off and continue. Yet again, restart the whole program.

All in all, I like the idea and the art works quite well. But it suffers from game breaking problems, glitches, poor soundtrack and it doesn't feel any where near as good to play as the original.

Oh Jesus no I didn't make this. Classic's Sonic 1 is almost down to the dime accurate (when it comes to level design :P). You would more likely see me dead than make sonic talk or use *shudders* that SWHOOSH noise for a jump. The game was rushed.

Stuff like this is just pure lazyness. A lot of the blocks weren't even aligned right. While using "Classic" Sonic's sprites half of them didn't even work right, nor were they ever consistant (Sonic 1 sprite here, sonic 2 there).

My apologies Hez, and I DID check out Sonic Classic, which KICKS ASS btw. Loved everything about it, a fantastic fangame, probably the best and most complete one I've seen. No offense if I expressed any. :)

The reactions to this are hilarious

  10. I know I'm late to the thread, but no wonder the creators dropped it, you're all a bunch of nit-picking assholes. Seriously, to tear it down to shreds to the tile placement, I'd want to quit too.

The game looked fucking gorgeous, and wasn't finished. You people expect too much.

I believe not because they advertised it, more or less, as finished.

Nitpicking block alignment is pushing it but it's telling to me that they trumped this game up quite a bit and at the first sign of rebuke they yanked the thing.

I totally agree with you >_<

  13. I really like this game. Marble zone music sounds amazing, classic with a modern twist. The effects are brilliant like when you hit a badnik and it sounds like a car crusher. I can't believe that there isnt a home for this game anymore. It's one of the best sonic 2 remakes I have seen

Being able to take criticism is part of making games. If you don't want criticism, then you will never improve. Did I nitpick Sonic Rebirth? Probably. But anything worth doing is worth doing right, and if you can't take the heat... well, you know the rest.

Yes, the game was nice looking. But do I want to play a nice looking port of Sonic 1 that sacrifices accuracy in control, physics, and level design? Graphics don't matter that much to me. I could just play the real Sonic 1 and I'd probably have more fun.

I can't begin to tell you how many things are wrong with this sentence.

Looked pretty finished to me. If they were cooperative I'd let them use Classics Sonic 1 Mode as a base.

If I remember correctly from SFGHQ, the creator of Sonic Rebirth (forgot his name) was going to fix up the physics and if I'm right, add Knuckles into the game (I could be wrong there), but after that, I haven't heard anything else...

I even checked his YouTube account. His name is gabrielferrierabar. The last time he logged in was 3 months ago, so it could be a simple sign of inactivity. ...Well, maybe.

  17. It wasn't finished. Read:

Hez, Classic Sonic is well and fine and all, but it is not the end-all be-all sonic fangame. Every single post you've made in this thread mentions Classic Sonic. We get it, you love your work, but stop trying to hog the spotlight. Imagine if Tweaker stopped in every hack thread and said "Y'know this is alright, and I'mma let you finish, but my Sonic Megamix is the best romhack of all time."

We don't need that kind of feedback.

I believe the creator initially said that build of Sonic Rebirth was "completed" but two or three days later admitted it wasn't as polished as he would have liked and pulled it.

You are correct. Heck, even this video right here explicitly says in the description that the full version would be at SAGE, which it was.

Afterwords, in the SFGHQ forums, the creator admitted to the game being rushed for SAGE and that he "wanted to make everything right". The download link was then pulled due to personal dissatisfaction with the then-released build and he started working on some fixes and features, which he reported in the thread up until mid-November.

The abrupt stop to these updates seems to suggest something coming up in his personal life rather than simply folding under complaints. After all, he seemed pretty confident with the progress being made up to that point.

It was advertised as the complete version before the release. He backed away from that statement after the negative feedback. I wouldn't go as far as tile placement as being a major flaw in the game, but the game played pretty horrible.

It might have looked pretty but it certainly didn't play well enough to keep most people playing past GHZ.

The creator should have focused his efforts on making an original game with his talents rather than trying to do a remake of a game where people will already have certain expectations. You can't expect the audience to suddenly lower their expectations on what a remake should be just because the developer isn't capable of making a game play like the one he's remaking. If he can't accomplish the task of making sure the game plays as close as possible to the original, then he shouldn't be remaking it in the first place.
