http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Laseractive-Sega-Mega-LD-full-set-All-24-titles-Myst-Extras-/171225341989 Probably the only way we're going to get dumps of the rarer titles, such as Virtual Australia and the Myst prototypes.
I like the way I managed to miss three of those discs when making pages all those months ago. p.s. this can be someone else's job to fill in the blanks - I do enough
Probably slim, but no harm in asking. I'd say it might be slightly overpriced anyway if you broke it down, so no-one may buy it. Myst is worth about $2000-$2500, Time Gal about $1000-1500, Road Prosecutor about $600-$1000, not sure about Virtual Australia, could be as high as $2000, and the rest would be not much more than $300-$350 and many of the common ones would be pushing it past $80-$150, so I'd estimate the real value to be closer to $10,000-$12,000
If I had $$$ to burn I would love to buy this. Being able to say you own all the Mega LD games is quite an accomplishment. That being said cant retro do some sort of kickstarter or something to get the money to buy this?
No. Couldn't even get a brass razoo for either of the Myst protos when they became available individually ($2400 and $2600).
I tried asking for 100$ so I can release two Saturn protos earlier, and a total of 1 person sent me 35$.
Sega-related projects play second best to sports tape and steroid use at Sonic Retro (see: 4+ years of haggling to get people to edit our wiki), but stretch too far further afield and you get into hoarders' territory and bidding wars. It's to be expected, although money spent on what turned out to be dull review copies could have gone to better causes. Then again, hindsight is a wonderful thing though I suppose.
The only thing you might raise $15000 for is a Sonic 1 proto with welcome signs and blue goblin things.
you know, this is not exactly the right place to be doing this... Raising funds for Mega LD titles should be done in communities that actually deal with the system. Or at least try and get this going in multiple places at once...
I just bought them myself all on my lonesone. They're currently with Nemmie. I figured I might ask for donations when they get released, as a 'Hey, if you enjoyed this, send me a couple of bucks in appreciation, because I just spent about $10,000 on a Mega LD collection whose value is now set to plumet now that I've made them available for you to play for free"
Don't release them until you've got your money back. Do it sporadically if you have to but don't take a big loss like that. After $x.xx is raised, ________ gets released and so forth. I was actually contemplating doing this, hence my inquiry, but you beat me to it.
I just don't see that happening. There's nothing really that interesting in the Mega LD catalogue that anyone would shed bucket fulls of money to get the dumps. I'd be lucky to get a few hundred dollars of appreciation, but I don't think it's going to work to hold them at ransom until I get all my money back. The community interested in them isn't that large or generous (and there is no Sonic LD title). I'll probably sell the inferior Myst proto, and try and get some money back on that. Probably not a lot of interest in it now as I think the word is getting around that they're getting dumped. EDIT: Maybe I can write it off as a 'donation' on my tax return. Can we get Sega Retro registered as a charitable organisation?
Just to be clear, I didn't buy the $15,000 collection advertised above. I've amassed my own Mega LD collection over the last few years for almost the same amount of money (mostly cos of the pricey Myst protos amounting to about $5000, but Time Gal and Road Prosecutor weren't exactly cheap either). All I am missing 3D Virtual Australia (which I'm still searching for), and the other demo discs (which are supposedly identical to the final versions anyway. There is also another mythical proto called "Legacy" of which we have reports of only one known prototype disc owned by a Japanese hoarder. I've already scanned the covers, discs and manuals, and am in the process of cropping them for Sega Retro. I plan on bundling the scans with the dumps as well - just think that's a nice idea. I always like it when I pirate a music album that the cover scans are included too.
