Don't forget, there's hasn't been a compilation with those even more obscure Sonic Waku Waku whatever games in them, although I doubt those are very easy to emulate if at all, but still. Throw those in a compilation along with Knuckles Chaotix and SegaSonic, a few extras here and there, and that's a good amount of money out of my pocket straight to Sega.

Like it or not, the pretty HD graphics of Sonic Unleashed did not come cheap and it's re-releases like this that likely pay for that shit.

I like how in the video they slowly reveal Sonic 1; as if they're almost embarrased to admit that they're releasing it for the 4739th time. Of course that's not the case, but that's what I got from watching it.

    Ethical? Yes. Legit? Yes.

...if you own the original genesis cart, like I'm sure most members here do. In fact, I'm sure most people here have a few different copies of Sonic 1 released for various different platforms. Having backups of games you own is not piracy.

Legit? Not according to Nintendo, and for that reason presumably at least one legal authority.

I wasn't aware Nintendo wrote laws.

fyi, their stuff about not being allowed to make backups of their games is bullshit, btw. They only include that to try to deter people from having backup copies.

    USA: http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-digital.html
    UK: http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyrigh...k_copyright_law
So as I said, Nintendo's word is bullshit. It's legal if you own a game to have a backup copy. Most countries allow this, I've just pulled out the UK and US ones as together they cover like 75% of the board =P

Thanks for the info. It was silly of me not to do some proper research before citing Nintendo, who I know take emulation a bit too seriously.

Hence the part of my post that you cut out:
    :P
But perhaps they're just BSing, or taking creative license with some obscure law.

They're BSing. Nintendo's always taken this line with regards to copies of their software.

I remember a site somewhere, long time ago [4 - 5 yrs ago?], that actually dissected all of Nintendo's shit piece by piece on this subject. Taking their legal-ese on their site and rebuking it with substantiated facts and opinions.

It was quite cool actually, too bad it is probably long gone, lost in the bowels of the internet. I tried finding it on Google with no luck.

  10. Whoopee. Sega once again release Sonic 1.

No disrespect to Sega, but they can do better than this. Why don't they recreate some of the older games they have made and reintroduce them to a new generation. Rather than just release the same old game for who knows how many times

Honestly, I don't see why Sega can't fully remake Sonic 1 instead of porting it to hell. And I don't meant making a "rehash sequel" like 4, I mean actually remaking every detail to absolute perfection in HD (perhaps 3D, but in a Classic art style rather than modern)- even the physics, and bringing back Classic Sonic (even though Sega has proven they are unwilling to do so, which IS fine by me, but obviously most people associate the older design of Sonic when thinking Classic Sonic games, for obvious reasons- though I expect some people consider the Adventures classics by now, given how long it's been since they were made). But that will never happen, so oh well- it's a dream I'd like to see, in my own opinion- though I bet fans would even find a way to complain about it even if it was done.

But yeah, go ahead Sega, keep literally releasing the same old games just because a lot of your fans prefer those games to your recent stuff. Just remember people aren't very inclined to keep buying the same game, no matter who they are! (Sequels don't count, usually they DO have enough new content to warrant a sequel,)

Honestly, the only people I see buying the re-releases now, are newer fans and non fans who want to know what the hype surrounding the classics are about. Obviously the Classic fans who were buying the re-releases stopped buying them by the time there were over 4 of them. Unless they're THAT hardcore of a Sonic fan/collector, of course.

    Trapped in my own thoughts.
Two stageplays, a screenplay, and an album
For myself (and probably many others), there can be many different reasons to buy a rerelease. The first time I bought a Sonic game, it was Sonic Action 4 Pack, so I could own the games legally (until then, I'd only emulated). I bought Sonic Mega Collection so that I could have a greater selection. I bought Sonic Mega Collection Plus for Comix Zone. I bought the Genesis Sonic games on Virtual Console because my little brother's not allowed to use my gamecube discs (or my computer). I bought the original Genesis games because I wanted to play them in their original form. I bought Sonic Classic Collection so that I could play S3K on the go.

All in all, there are a lot of different reasons to buy rerelases. Hell, for people without any modern game console, a PC release of Sonic 1 might be a godsend.

Well, I was essentially saying there's barely anyone who would buy every re-release. I understand buying one or two re-releases, but over 4, and you'd have to be a pretty hardcore fan or a collector. At least that's what I think.

Me? The only copies I have of Sonic 1 are for the Genesis, , Gamecube (Mega Collection) and I think Sonic 1 was in Sonic Adventure DX, although it was the Gamegear version if I am remembering right.

Reminds me of the Mega Games compilation series they brought out for the Mega Drive, of which I've got Mega Games vol I and II (Mega Games II, coincidentally, also featured Golden Axe and Shinobi).

But yeah, I think I'll be giving this collection, and its subsequent sequels a miss.

The first 360 port of Sonic 1 on XBLA was better then the Ultimate Collection disc that was released later on to.

  16. I just saw on Wikipedia that Sonic CD was getting a Steam release.

    Bullshit or no?

There's no source, so probably bullshit.
Speaking of which, Sonic 1 is now on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/71113/

Was there a source for the claim?

    Otherwise, I'm assuming bullshit.

    Working on my art!
kinda off topic, but is there a higher res version of the sonic spinball art they use on steam? It looks rather awesome

EDIT: Nevermind found one, although I wish the dimensions were a bit better

    I'd really like a 1440 x 900 version. Oh well

The "Coming Soon to Steam" remark appears to be simply an edit from an earlier version of the article which read "Coming Soon to Gametap". The edit originated here, and the person who made the edit only has one other edit to their IP address - for Sonic R, which claims:

The scent of B.S. is thick in the air.
