Since I still hope I'll eventually get an answer to the question of "how was the desert zone called?", I propose you guys a very simple game: Try to think of some original names that could have been applied to the desert level. Who knows, maybe one of you will actually type the correct answer before we really know about it. You won't win any prize, but I guess you'll have the satisfaction of making a post bragging about it. Oh, and remember that the level names can even have just one single word in them. (To anybody who is wondering, I'm also still unsure about that title) EDIT: Finally got an answer for this, look for it around pages 6+.
So you're asking us what names to name that desert level? Am I getting what the format of this game is? I guess if the format is just to give a name to the zone and take what the majorioty says, then I too suggest "Dust Hill Zone" to be the name of the mock-up.
Since I'm the first I may aswell start with the "obvious" one. Dust Hill Zone Now for silly ones :P Cacti Capers Zone Tumbleweed Turmoil Zone Dry Dune Zone Of course they only describe a level with Sand, not one with both Sand and Snow. It's hard to think of a name that describes both... maybe Christmas Desert Zone or Freaky Weather Zone or even Crystal Desert Zone. Woah I wrote too much :P
Deep Caves. Seriously, anything but DHZ. We all know some guys are so jumpy about that level name, they don't want it to be written in a post whatsoever. We all know Sonic Team is reputed to rename every fucking zone at the last minute for reasons we may not talk because they'll get jumpy again.
Winter level would have been a seperate level, not combined like sonic H-b's sonic 2 long version. SANDY DESERT ZONE DUSTY HILL ZONE
What makes you so sure? Yeah I was thinking of putting Mystic Cave Zone. But I thought only Mystic Cave being called Dust Hill was possible so I didn't put it. EDIT: So this is why you were sure magraimon! Intresting that, because I always imagined a smooth transition.
Desert Zone is so obvious and so good at the same time. I see no better name to define it. My personal guess: Sandstorm Zone.

Dust Hill zone: for sand and snow under the same level (Can't find anything else). Gold Dust zone: for the hot desert level. Diamond Dust zone: for the cold desert level (winter level). Ehh... no, this is just a little meaningless game to see who will be closer when we finally get a straight answer. :P I have the feeling that the real name won't sound as good as many of the entries you guys have posted.
Well it could've been Dust Hi...*murdered* Desert Cavern Zone (the mock-up did show a caverny bit). Genocide City Zone (seriously. The zone in the mock-up looked kinda like there could have been deserted houses further on...to me it did anyway)
Nah, I believe it was your average metallic world. It makes sense that it got scrapped for another Metropolis act.
