Since we have a topic asking how we first came to know and love Sonic, I thought I'd ask if anyone ever made any amateur or silly mistakes playing the Sonic games. We can be big about our own mistakes, right?

For example, the biggest mistake I made was getting use to the boost system in Sonic Unleashed. It wasn't until Generations that I learned you can HOLD THE BUTTON DOWN for a longer lasting boost. All this time, I was rapidly pressing the button like a maniac. :specialed: Oh boy... Well, at least I have a reason to pick up Unleashed and try and finish it.

Speaking of current game play mechanics, I keep forgetting I can boost through lines of enemies. Old habits make me want to keep performing the Homing Attack.

Finally, I think I need to look up hints or watch other people play it, because the game play mechanics in the Sonic Riders series never really clicked with me. Half of the time, I am lucky if I can finish a race in the top 3 position, and if I ever finish first, I feel like it's a fluke. I definitely prefer more platforming and traditional game play over racing games.

The easiest way to get better at Rider is to play some free races with Tails, since he has better handling than anyone else. Once you get used to him, do Story mode, then mission mode, then grand prix mode. You'll want to unlock mission mode as soon as you can so you can learn all you need to handle the characters properly, manage air and understand the different styles ( Speed, Fly and Power). Once you get good, it's generally safe to stick with Power types since they lose no speed when using their abilities, unless there isn't enough obstacles to destroy to keep the Air meter high or the Power shortcuts aren't really worth it. Usually people will stick with AiAi due to his long boost time, but people will use Sonic for Speed and Tails for Fly if Power isn't necessary. The rest is up to you, since I'm still trying to get some records for that game.

You are talking about the CGN/PS2/XBX version, right?

As for amateur moments, I suck at Unleashed PS360 in general, if that means anything.

I consider myself one of the greatest players of the classics in the world! But on EHZ Act 2 I almost always fly off that diagonal yellow spring and land on a coconuts badnik. I never fucking learn!

God fucking dammit this every time

Also, I have been known to forget how the Labyrinth Zone boss works on occasion and still sometimes try to hit him repeatedly. Always ends badly.

To be fair though Coconuts is a fucking asshole in general. From my experience he's a badnik you approach with caution because everytime I charge in there, there's a good chance I get hit.

The ###### in Sonic 3. I couldn't figure that out the Up & Down mechanic on my own and so I would always start from Ice Cap Act 1 on the level select. It's now burned into my brain that I start from Ice Cap first to complete the rest of the game. Just starting from the very beginning is akin to learning how to walk again. :specialed:

I did the same thing in Windmill Isle Act 2, but it was justified, since I played UnWiished at my friend's house beforehand. My ears were in pain from hearing Sonic spurting out five lines in rotation.

One of my own moments would be in Unleashed (again), overall learning to drift with the triggers. Before that, my hand felt incredibly awkward holding circle and square. They only teach you to use L2 / R2 on Savannah Citadel Act 2! At least Colours and Generations fixed the problem. Triggers are your only option now.

The amount of time overs I got trying to get passed that barrell. I even remember my cousin once ringing me up saying, "Hey, I'm stuck on the barrell bit, how do I get passed it?" =P

Now, like the most of us, I can get passed it in a matter of seconds.

Everyone mentions that barrel in Sonic 3, but I could never figure out what the hell to do in the Death Egg "engine room." I could never see that the lights on that vertical platform change when you hit them, so it would be by luck that I would pass that part... but by then, the time would be somewhere around 8 or 9 minutes. It wasn't until emulation came along that I could tell what the hell was happening.

I remember having issues with that my first time playing Death Egg as well.

Occasionally, I still fall in between spikes in Green Hill Zone. Usually due to Shoes/Invincibility recklessness.

For years it never occurred to me to use the insta-shield in Sonic 3 to destroy the non-ice orbinauts in Launch Base. I always just let myself get hit thinking that they were unbeatable enemies put in there by sadistic jerk-face designers. Wasn't the case, I was just stupid :specialed:

  12. My first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure and I was really young when I got it. I wasn't really sure how the game played out at the time and on Emerald Coast where you need to "find" where Tails crashed, I kept running into the Kikis thinking that they were Tails because of the coloring. I feel so stupid thinking back to that now

It's possible to actually kill Robotnik in the maze. You just have to have really good timing and master Sonic's momentum so his jumping arc doesn't run into the spears.

As for the topic, I fuck up the loop trick every now and then and it kills my momentum when I screw it up.

Just the other day I ran into a red sphere in the very first special stage of Sonic 3 and quit playing because I was so ashamed of myself. And to this day, it almost always takes me 8 or 9 minutes in-game to finish Sandopolis Act 2.

Yeah, Sandopolis Act 2 was always a race against time whether you played as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. I always got to the end in about 7 minutes average, if I recall.

Sandopolis was never a huge issue for me, actually -- at least the first level was always way more confusingly laid out than the second. Protip: on the sandslide maze, that one swinging platform marks the point where you need to jump off to continue.
(Edit: tried as Sonic w/o emeralds, got like 5:20 or so. Decent.)

Anyway, submitted without comment: an astounding moment of incompetence

This x10. Nobody should feel bad about themselves after watching that.

I love the Katcho and Game Center CX, by the way.

Aaaaahahahaha, this is awesome! In some way, it makes me wish I could experience Sonic games again for the first time. Oh well, time to live vicariously through this video!

Same thing, except in Sonic Rush. Had no idea how to get into the special stages for a week.

When I was playing Sonic Colors, I had no idea you could press A to jump higher when the game goes into slow-mo on a big jump. In my defense, the game never tells you this.
