Album of new, original Sega Genesis-style Sonic songs

  1. If you are a fan of Sonic Music from the Genesis era, you are in for a treat. I have recorded an album of original Sonic-style music, drawing inspiration from those classic games. I used a VST plug-in called VOPM, which perfectly emulates the Genesis sound chip. It will feel like you are uncovering a lost Sonic soundtrack! Please give it a listen. I worked hard to make sure the music was of the highest quality. There are nods to classic levels such as "Mystic Cave Zone", and "Marble Zone", among others. Let me know what you think, or if you want to use these for a hack, or something. Someone recommended that I share this on Sonic Retro, so here it is. Below is the Youtube link and the download link.
    Enjoy!

I envy all ye who use VOPM with such skill.

That said, I'm going to enjoy listening to this.

I was hoping this would be a real album available on vinyl :( Oh well, cool stuff :P

Edit: now that I've heard some of the tracks, I'll say this is very good work. They remind me a lot of Sonic 1. Saphire Falls is my favorite so far, but some of the tracks I think sound a little shallow, could use a couple more instruments.

Nice! Really solid compositions you've come up with here. Good choice in instrumentation, too—really feels like it has a place in a classic Sonic game.

Did you keep the system limitations in mind when writing these, or did you simply write them with the instrumentation in mind? I'm in assuming the latter since there's a lot of harmony going on here that probably wouldn't fly on the actual YM2612.

    Is that so?

Maybe I'll play these songs over the Sonic 4 soundtrack on my 360 then.

  7. Thanks! Yeah, I wrote them with the instrumentation in mind.

Very nicely done! I will listen to this properly when I have a chance :)

Also, Tweaker was very complimentary which is awesome since I know he does a lot of composition for hacks!

Shadow Cliff has got to be my favorite here, but I'm noticing a disturbing lack of fast, upbeat songs on this album. They all sound like they're for Sonic's more methodic, plodding level designs (lookin' at you Marble Zone). Not say that the songs aren't amazing, mind you.

  10. That's a good point. It's true that they're not as fast and busy as much of the Sonic music. I guess I was more inspired by Sonic 1 here. But I plan to make Vol. II a lot more fast and upbeat. Thanks for the feedback!

Actually, beyond just the composition, I noticed a lot of similarity to Sonic 1's music. There's definitely a smaller section of instruments used than there were in Sonic 2 and 3, and the lead synth is generally the same among all your songs. Nevertheless, they all are amazingly memorable, and would fit right in with a classic Sonic game.

  12. Thanks for the kind words!

It's amazing how you can get feelings of nostalgia over stuff not actually from the time period...

    This collection is great!

  15. Haha, that's awesome. Thank you!

My favorite is definitely Windy Wetlands, but I think it fits as a good ending theme IMO. Awesome work on this KGB525! + - He should be promoted to Member now. xP

I just listened through a portion of the album and I absolutely love it. At the risk of echoing everyone else in here, it sounds so nostalgic and I get a mixture of games that spring into my mind when I hear this.

    Simply beautiful.

  20. These songs are

    FANTASTIC!

These are amazing, sound like they were ripped from a Sonic game that never got off the cutting room floor!

    Amazing job!
