57-year-old game creator Yuji Naka arrested in Japan

Yeah... and how many of THEM do it?

So chances are, they knew for some time, but decided only now to report it. Of course this is all speculation, but someone had to tell the police. Who would have known? Probably someone inside the company that he left some time ago.

I agree that it smells like retaliation.

 

And the timing just works out too well. He bought the stock almost three years ago. Why the arrest now? Just long enough after his public bashing of SE for the police to gather evidence and for it to not appear too obvious.

Just speculation, of course. We'll never know the truth. But I have no doubt that when a former employee sues a company like SE, the first thing they do is run a very thorough background check.

 

I'm not too familiar but wasn't Naka at least worth over a million? I don't get why he'd risk jail-time over $20k.

 

Insider trading is rampant in Japan and rarely enforced. Another point that really makes this seem like retaliation.

I don't hate him for this. Best case scenario he picked a bad time to buy stock options. Worst case scenario he convinced himself to do something basically victimless on an individual basis (though terrible on a systemic level.)

Or maybe Sega can have him lead the next Yakuza title...

 

It's not like Naka is the only one who did this; he was just the one who got tattled on caught. It's pretty rampant.

Vaguely interesting to see how this develops, but if this practise really is widespread, it's hard to shake the idea that Square Enix are being petty. Dunno - wait for a conviction I guess.

Congress insider trades all the time. At least Naka is a good programmer and probably hasn't invaded any Middle Eastern countries for absolutely no reason or visited any literal pedophile islands like those guys. But maybe the last several years have jaded me on the exactly the sorts of crimes that I should care about. Maybe twenty years ago I would've cared about something like this.

I feel like The Internet and Reddit-types have a bit of a chip on their shoulder about "white collar crimes" and how they're not, in their view, punished as severely as lower class crimes, and probably to some extent, that's true, but...this isn't exactly Bernie Madoff (and frankly, petty crime that happens near me is far more of a concern to me than anything like this). I honestly can't imagine caring about this beyond that it sucks that he got caught, but surely I'm "immoral" by internet standards for not making a show of it.
