New Sonic Hack by anthall

Is this good for a first hack (Note that I am NOT an expert)?

    Hi,

    I have created a Sonic Hack called "Sonic Get's Poisoned!".

    It is just a level variation hack at the moment but at least all the levels are there.

    There is a glitch in Starlight Zone 2 which forbids you from finishing but I'll fix it some day.

    I named it because I was messing with Sonic's colours and I needed a "reason" why he was green.

    It's here and I'm open to praise or criticism (as long as your polite about it of course). Any don't mention that I haven't done any tile hacking. I'm hot that experienced at this yet! If you have any suggestions feel free to mention some as well.

    The palletes made my eyes bleed. And the layout has way to many bottomless pits, and spikes. I died like 2 times in the first level.

    Sorry, but I have to admit that this hack is a big no no.
    The palettes make me want to puke, and why is the sega screen totally blank and the title screen in shades of grey?
    And Sonic gets poisoned by what? He's already green when the game starts.

    The layouts aren't bad, but they lack polish—they're playable and flow rather well, certainly, but there's just... not a lot to them.

    The palletes are horrible though, sorry. One thing you should never do is change Sonic's palette—it won't turn out well. I suggest reverting the palette changes you've made and trying over from the start, this time trying to make something graphically pleasing instead of changing them just because you can.

    The layouts are what have potential here, but right now it's pretty below par. I seriously suggest trying to improve what you have before making a topic on it.

    One which doesn't clash with the background... also, the boss and all of Act 3 is WTF-ish, with 4 loops one after another, 4 motobugs at once, and 8 bee enemies attacking under a waterfall at once...

    ...And a boss which makes Green Eggman's forehead your true enemy.

    I did read your post above and your critism shows me clearly what a bad hack is thank you.

    I now see the errors in this and I will make the improvements to it.

    Thanks for your honesty everyone. We all start off low doesn't everyone :)

    Well, there's good moments and bad moments, and I find myself laughing at the strange things you have occurring in this hack;

    So I think the simplest thing to do is restore Sonic's pallete, fix some of the bizarre errors (no background in SYZ3???) and... well, yeah. It could go somewhere.

    The level designs you've got going here are some of the most unique I've ever seen in a hack. This is the first time I've ever played a stage based entirely around bottomless pits without feeling completely alienated afterwards. I quit at Labyrinth Zone, but I had fun with this. The palettes certainly are terrible, and if you manage to clean them up somewhere along the way, well, that'd be swell, but as it stands, the bizarre color schemes didn't detract from the game's playability for me.

    Get rid of all of the bottomless pits in every zone aside from Spring Yard. Also, try adding an upper section to SYZ2, one with a high probability of falling to the lower level- it'd be nice to have something to fall back on.

    Star Light is physically painful to play- try something less... well, crazy.

    Also, Scrap Brain 1 is impossible to finish. The little platforms drag you into the wall and trap you.

    Yeah SBZ1 is quite buggy at the moment. But it is winnable. All
    but SLZ act 3.

    I have some questions:
    I like the snow effect in GHZ. If I make the sky white would that make it better? (I WILL change Sonic to green)

    Apart from SLZ that we all know looks bad, does the others look good?

    Marble Zone comes close, but the orange pillars need to be toned down to not be neon. Also there's a bit too much red...

    Alright everyone. I have done some great improvements to this hack.

    Changes
    ----------
    1. It is now called Sonic The Hedgehog 2008.

    2. Sonic is now happy that he is Blue as opposed to Green.

    3. CFZ/GHZ and SLZ now have less clashing colours. I don't think GHZ is perfect, but it clashes a lot less then before.

    4. Many areas in which Sonic could get stuck are now fixed.

    5. Many errors have been fixed.

    6. I have removed lots of "random floating objects" reminants.

    7. SYZ2 now has a bottom area in which you can fall down if you fail to pass the jumps above as opposed to instant death. It is not fully finished yet, but is 95% complete. Not everywhere is safe at falling down though.

    8. Rearranged some parts of the game, and added some new areas.

    9. Removed some life boxes, as in my opinion, they were a bit excessive.

    10. SOME bottomless pits have been removed.

    11. Some areas I thought as "Cheap shots" have been fixed.

    12. SBZ1 Slide platforms bug fixed.

    13. SHZ3 Boss is now better designed.

    14. Some random fixes.

    SYZ3 I couldn't put the background back, unfortunately any help?

    1. Is it an improvement on the old one, and how much of an improvement is it?

  19. Well, sorry if this is offending you, but this hack is just standard sonic 1 with some broken pallettes and some standard modifications everyone has a guide for.

    Sorry, but it is not better than "bad"..

    What did I just tell you about offering constructive feedback? Nobody cares if you like the hack or not; the idea here is to offer constructive feedback about making the hack better, not "LOL THAT SUCKS" which does absolutely nothing to improve either his confidence or his design practices. This isn't Sonic CulT.
