Ohhhhh I've been waiting for this day since I was a mere baby watching YouTube. Will check this out soon.
Still reading through but there are strings for an Xbox version in the text with configs for the controller and SDK.
The 3.14 release had me the MOMENT I heard that Tidal remix from Vectorman 1. Holy hell, this is all so amazing. I was curious when I saw magazine scans back in the day and then saddened when it was cancelled (though in hindsight, it probably wasn't a bad thing). But seeing the earlier demos that looked more true to the original? Holy heck! I remember Game Informer mentioning that the initial pitch had Vectorman with something closer to his original design. What we could have had... Regardless, this is so cool. I'll have to see the rest when I can.
It's really cool to see this unearthed after all this time, especially the earlier prototypes, but they don't really have that punchy, snappy gameplay of the originals. Probably for the best this one never came out but I sure would like someone else to take a stab at it nowadays.
Typically, you want to get the core gameplay down quick while prototyping it out. All of the prototypes here look fairly floaty and don't look like they'd be much fun to control on a fundamental level. And considering that this stuff was shown off as a vertical slice, it's fair enough to point out that, even if it were polished up, the core game doesn't exactly look fun.
As a company, I think you want to fund things that look promising. The game looks like it perhaps had a certain amount of potential, but the amount of *uncertainty* is what raises a red flag for me. The game, as shown here, looks overly cartoonish and silly. While the originals did have small doses of that, it was largely serious in nature. This doesn't strike the right balance in my assessment. Point is, I think you have to "get it right" within a certain time frame, or else you're pumping money into something that has a bit of backtracking to do. That's my opinion. I don't know if that was the reason behind the cancelation, but all the footage I've seen, this as well as that of a later build that looked more DOOM-esque, just don't seem quite right. And that assessment is done without a final build, because what the developers are striving for is to make something that fits well with the other games (or at least I would think).
It might have been worth pursuing the "Halo-like" build as an original IP, it does look like it could have been fun. Just not Vectorman. What could have been, right?
