  1. xm4smps 4.1 'beta'

    10 September 2011 - 02:41 PM

Not sure if anyone even still uses this besides me, but whatever. I haven't touched xm4smps's source code in over 2 years and I don't really intend to touch it again for another ten, but I was informed that the current version exploded on XMs created on OpenMPT 1.19+. So I got some info on the subject from Oerg and Saga_Musix on #modulez on Esper, grabbed the last source code I had, and fixed it. You might as well get all the new features I'd actually made before I stopped bothering with it, too; previewing is completely disabled because it doesn't work (it's not even compiled in; feel free to try to fix it yourself if you want. It's a mess and allegro is a pain), but 32x support should work just fine (I've been using it for ages and never had any serious problems), and savestating probably works but I haven't used it in years so I honestly can't be sure. Loading x3v files sometimes crashed it in the previous version due to a bad memory free; that is fixed too. Consider this 'beta' for that reason. Though a final isn't really likely to come out...

Windows binary is here and source code is here. Have fun.
  2. Sonic X Japanese, DVD Quality

    06 January 2010 - 07:42 PM

For a long time, the state of publically available Sonic X raws on the Internet has been… pathetic, to say the least. Almost no episode was available as DVD quality rips (only 1, 3, 4, 5, and 52), with the others being merely analog TV rips of wildly varying quality. This is an attempt to remedy that situation, by using the video from the french DVDs (which are uncensored) and adding the japanese audio of the best quality raws I can find. (The reason I'm not using the japanese DVDs for this is that they're ridiculously expensive; while each french DVD set costs 10€ with around 12 episodes, I have to pay nearly 4 times that for 2-3 episodes for a japanese DVD. In other words, the japanese DVDs are 16 times as expensive as the french equivalents. No thanks.)

These episodes will be encoded with the H.264 codec, in an MKV container, and they should take up between 100 to 150mb per episode, with two audio tracks (the japanese audio track — the default, and the french audio track — since I have it, I might as well include it) and one subtitle track (english subtitles for the japanese track — basically the existing subtitles by GTW, HEDGESMFG, Hazuki, and Coxy1987 that have been around for years, only with several typos corrected, some of the wording changed (when it's too awkward), decent subtitle styling, and subtitles for the opening, endings and insert songs). Episodes where insert songs were changed on DVD (26 and 52, afaik) will probably have a third audio track so you can change which songs you prefer (though I still don't have the DVD version of episode 26's audio, so you may be 'stuck’ with Kotoba ni Dekinai if I can't find someone to rip that for me. Kotoba ni Dekinai is better than the Hikaru Michi instrumental they used as the replacement, anyway =P).

There'll also be some fun “omakes” as separate files for people who want to laugh a bit =P

The subtitle style was somewhat inspired by PositronCannon’s Digimon fansubs (Candara with a blue border and black shadow). If you like Digimon, I highly recommend them.

P.S: PLEASE, don't watch this in VLC. VLC's support for proper subtitles is, frankly, pathetic. On Windows, just use media player classic or some other similar DirectShow player with the CCCP, and on Mac OS X and Linux, just use mplayer (with the -ass option to turn on ASS subtitle rendering).

These episodes will be regularly posted here. Some omakes and other fun stuff may be posted there too.

  3. xm4smps

    09 December 2008 - 06:57 PM

Ever since the beginning of November, I've been developing a tool similar to xm3smps, but with several improvements made to it. Now, it's finally ready for its first release. Behold: xm4smps!

    Posted Image

Created entirely from scratch, xm4smps has an interface similar to xm3smps' (but with my own touch). Internally, however, xm4smps is completely different from xm3smps. Some of the key differences to note:

    - xm4smps generates songs in ASM format as opposed to raw song binaries, though they are assembled for the convenience of the user.
    - By reading and converting each pattern of the XM separately, and comparing them individually within each channel, several optimisations can be achieved. For this reason, in about 95% of cases, a song converted by xm4smps will be smaller than the same song converted by xm3smps.
    - xm4smps is multi-platform.
    - It supports the E7 coordination flag (aka "smpsNoAttack").

Using xm4smps is very similar to using xm3smps, since I intentionally made the user interface similar. Therefore, it shouldn't be complicated to adapt at all. However, a very important point needs to be made here. Due to the different way in which xm4smps converts songs, it is absolutely imperative that you do not, under any circumstances, start a channel on the XM without a note or a rest. In other words, don't do this:

    Instead, do this:

    Download links:

    Win32 version
    Win64 version
    Mac OS X version
Source code (should compile on any system with the Qt library)

To use xm4smps on Windows, you only need to extract and run it. To use it on Mac OS X, it's a similar concept, however, if you wish to be able to assemble binary song files, as opposed to only getting the assembly source, you need to install ASMX by Bruce Tomlin (ASMX is already included in the windows versions). On Linux, you should compile it using "qmake xm4smps.pro; make" (if you're using QT3) or with "qmake xm4smps.pro4; make" (if you're using QT4). Like with Mac OS X, you also need to install ASMX if you want to be able to generate binary files.

To put the E7 coordination flag behind a note, just put "g15" in the volume column of said note on the XM (that represents a maximum-speed note portamento, which pretty much does the same thing as E7)

    Special thanks go to:
    - Nineko for doing the original xm3smps, and helping me along when making this tool
    - Tweaker and Saxman for breaking down the SMPS format
    - Marc/Cinossu for developing s1smps2asm (I included the s1smps2asm macros with this tool, with his permission)
    - roxahris, Nineko (again), and oerg866, for testing this
    - Bruce Tomlin for creating ASMX, which is used by this tool to assemble the output asm.

    Have fun!
  4. Using a JP/US Sega Saturn on Europe

    11 September 2008 - 10:01 PM

So I may be getting a japanese Sega Saturn off eBay, with MK's help. And I live in Europe. And here enter the power issues.

Japan and America use 110 volt plugs, while Europe uses 240 volt plugs. How can I use a non-european Saturn here without blowing it up?
  5. [WANTED/OFFERING] Offering music for layouts

    27 April 2008 - 11:08 AM

Project needing help: Sonic 1 Remastered
    Position sought: Layout designer
Description: I need level layouts kthx.
Contact: PM, or check my profile, I guess.

    Type of help offering: Music
Examples of prior work: not relevant
Hours per week (or month) available to help: not relevant

So, I need new level layouts for Sonic 1 Remastered, as the original S1 layouts have got seriously boring by now. Problem is, I completely suck at layouts, so I guess I need to get other people to do them for me. Of course, I'm not expecting people to do this for free. Therefore I'm giving away some of these songs for you to use in your own hack in exchange for doing layouts for me (1 layout -> 1 song). Yeah, I know some of these songs suck, but some are pretty good, too. Again, if you do one level layout for me you can pick one of these songs. Afterwards it will be crossed from the list (I.e. I won't give the same song to more than one person). Any takers?

EDIT 3: Oh, and in case it wasn't obvious, I'm looking for good level layouts, not half-assed attempts kthx.

Extra tidbit of information: In S1R, the eggman box is a bubble shield, S is an electric shield, and the goggles are a fire shield. Subtype 0 is a random monitor, think Sonic 2 2P monitors. Walls breakable only by Knuckles (like in Sonic 3's AIZ) are object 29.
