Topics I've Started

  1. Little things that annoy you most in a Sonic game?

    04 February 2009 - 12:50 AM

... and this had better not turn into another Next-Gen complaint thread. I mean for us to discuss little things that annoy us in ANY Sonic game.

My annoyance? Ice Cap Zone, the riding ice block. You push it the wrong way, you've gotta go through heck and high water to get it back into a useable spot. I remember back in NC when my next door neighbour Michael and I would play this together as Sonic and Tails. He would always wanna be a butt just to make me mad for the heck of it and shove the ice block the wrong way. Ugh, I could have murdered him.

Another annoying part for me is in Carnival Night Zone, when you're riding along the fans and TRYING to pass through the rotating bumpers. *shudders* eeeeeviiilllll....
  2. Are the new Sonic games REALLY so bad?

    06 July 2008 - 10:19 PM

Okay, for the record, this is mostly a curiosity topic of what other members of the community think while looking from another point of view. I'm not trying to brainwash anyone into liking Shadow or anything, which I'm assuming you're all probably thinking.

But more to the topic: It seems all anyone does is praise the old Sonic games and bash the new ones. Now considering the name of this place is Retro, I can to some extent understand that. My point is that it seems most of the community is grotesquely against newer Sonic games, and while giving good reasons for their dislike, I have to ask one question:

Are the new Sonic games really THAT bad, or are we only looking at the bad points and letting them overwhelm us from seeing the good points? Let's see a PRIME example: Sonic Heroes

Bad points I hear everyone talking about:
    -Terrible Camera
    -Terrible Controls
    -Corny/Childish lines
    -NOT the best triple-character system

That's just a few bad points I've heard. I agree with most of them (Especially the corny lines part), but are we forgetting some of the good points Heroes had? Such as:
-A new twist on an old villain that for once ISN'T Robotnik. Metal Sonic suddenly got cool and bad ass.
-SOME of the music was pretty good, like Team Chaotix's theme and What I'm Made Of.
-The level designs took some slightly new twists on old favourites, such as Ocean Palace being a beach/island-type
Zone, which was standard as the opening Zone in earlier Sonic games, but with new twists and attractive graphics
while its at it as the beach/island-type Zone becomes an Island Palace.
-This point may be controversial, but the special stages were another resurrection of an old favourite with new twists.
    Spheres and a Tube Pipe <3, y'all.

Okay, is anyone else seeing my point or am I just blowing wind here? All I'm saying is that maybe we're looking too negatively at newer Sonic games. I'm not saying that there AREN'T bad points that Sonic Team needs to work on, because there are! What I'm getting at is that maybe we're not taking enough time to look at the good points.

Now to the main event of this topic of my curiosity, this is what I'm asking you all to do: Look at the newer Sonic games and try to see what you like in them, and thusly discuss. I'm mostly just curious as to what anyoen has to say positively about the newer Sonic games, considering most of what I hear about them around here is negative. Plus, I felt it might make a good and different topic.

*prepares to get bombarded for what might be considered a dark patriotism*
  3. This has been bugging me for a while...

    31 July 2006 - 07:52 PM

    Is there anyone else here who feels that, in a manner of speaking, Sega spent more effort on Sonic 2 for the Game Gear than they did for Sonic 2 on the Genesis? I mean, think about these;

    Mine Cart
    Water Skipping
Hang Gliding WITH a wind-catcher effect to boot
    Riding inside a giant bubble

Also, what about some of the other goodies, like for instance the bizaare but very cool looking enclosed fountains in Aqua Lake Zone? (You know, they look like a glass mushroom with water flowing down inside.) Not to mention walking on and bouncing from clouds in Sky High Zone. As well, each boos had their own act in each Zone! I mean you go through Acts 1 and 2, then hit Act 3; A.K.A. Boss' Act.

Has anyone else thought this or am I just being wierd again? Discuss.
  4. Red Rings in Lava Reef Zone Act 2?

    27 March 2006 - 02:15 PM

When I was a kid, I was once playing Sonic 3&K, and was playing as Tails in Lava Reef Zone act two. I always enjoyed playing as Tails, because I could use his flight to explore the Zones in and out.

Anyway, at the point of Lava Reef Zone Act 2 when you're about to face Knuckles (Right when his theme starts playing), I decided to fly up and take a look around the above area. Well, when I did, I saw some rings with red shading. At first I thought my game was glitching, but I went back several times later and it was the same every time! Here is a screenshot I took with an Emulator.

So, anyone know why the rings are red, while all the other rings in the Zone are normally coloured? Is it a pallette glitch or something?
  5. I finally did a Hack!

    26 February 2006 - 11:57 PM

Yes, you read the title right. I finally got to creating a hack. It's not much of one, admittedly... mainly a pallette hack with edited level order, playlist order and title cards. I'd say there's also an edited menu order, but the only thing that DOESN'T work happens to be the level select. -_-; I tried, but I couldn't fix that... anyway, only other problem is there's still a few water effects in ARZ, even though I took out the water... couldn't fix that either, but taking out the water, I also had to edit objects a little and the layout slightly.

But, erm, anyway... here it is. Not much, I know, but I kinda like it, I guess. Download it by clicking here.
