I wrote a bash script that plays simple tunes using 'aplay' and some 8bit PCM samples.
It's probably not very well written because I'm not really a programmer/technical guy, and I only did this for fun anyway.
This only works on linux, of course. And it doesn't work as well if you use pulseaudio, so if you want to try running this, you should stop the pulseaudio daemon first. And stop any other processes you might have running (like your web browser, etc) for good measure, since it seems to have timing stutter problems if there's a lot of other stuff going on at the same time.

Extract this into a folder, then run v7.sh on one of the .songfiles. Like "./v7.sh coolsong.songfile".

I just recently started getting interested in programming. I've always wanted to program, but never really had the talent for it. But lately, an online friend started teaching me, and thanks to him I started making progress. Now, here's a simple program I made using C/C++ and the Allegro library.

At the moment it's very basic and most certainly poorly designed and written. And if you look at the source, you'll see I copied parts from existing tutorials and examples. There are also some bugs, for example the jump doesn't always work properly. Anyway, my aim is to eventually expand this into a fully fledged game.

Do you have any comments or suggestions?

In the Hydrocity zone, if you're drowning and go on one of those speed boost things (which grab you and hold you on a rotating disc for a few moments before letting you go) at just the right moment, the drowning Sonic sprite goes flying across the screen.

Hello, my friends here at the Sonic Retro forums.

I've been playing Sonic recently, and there just aren't any other games like the original sonic games. I wish there was a suitable "Sonic 4", but sega has not delivered.

So, now I'm thinking that perhaps I could try playing some ROM hacks, or fangames (if there are any). Which fangames/hacks should I try out?
