thicker grass would be a good start, maybe a bigger pattern for the ..uhm.. dirt or whatever that is at the bottom. maybe double the size of what you have now -

My Genesis died about half a year ago so lately I've been playing Sonic 3 complete and Megamix on my modded Xbox. It's no where near as nice as playing it on Genesis but it gets the job done well enough.
