  1. Sonic Adventure (DC) can run on the Galaxy S

    15 December 2010 - 10:47 PM

Just thought this was interesting. Someone's working on a Dreamcast emulator for Android:

Unfortunately, these games will never be easy to play on a touchscreen. I would imagine that this would be more playable on phones with physical keyboards, though. Makes you also wonder what the iPhone 4 is capable of as far as emulation goes.
  2. Sonic Adventure bug database

    11 August 2010 - 02:13 PM

Like any other game, Sonic Adventure had bug testers combing through the game. And those testers, way back in 1999, complained about things that will still be present in the ports released later this year.

The Sonic Adventure bug database has been quietly hosted on Sonic Cult for the longest time in FileMaker Pro format, but here is an Excel spreadsheet and plain CSV of the database. I don't remember too much discussion on this database, but it's really interesting to read through some of these. This is most likely not a comprehensive record of all the bug testing this game ever received. These bugs are dated from 12/10/1998 to 8/12/1999, almost after the Japanese release of the game on 12/23/98. Many have to do with how the website worked (remember the built-in Sonic Adventure online rankings and Chao sharing?). Some of these bugs were fixed in time for the US version, and the database indicates which ones these are. Most of the fixes were only grammatical/spelling problems on the website end of the game, though. I was looking at the wrong column. Looks like they fixed a lot of show-stopping things.

While I've been reading through these, I've said to myself a lot of times, "man I wish they had fixed that". A lot of other bugs would have been too tedious to fix, like a bug stating that Big's tail passes through the MR mine cart when he walks into it. Here's a few notable ones.
    QUOTE
    • In Tikal's Past Valley, with any character except E-102 and Sonic, if the user's character runs up or down any stairs, the user's character's feet pass through the stairs. Characters' feet must not pass through solid objects.
    • No multi-player feature exists. To enhance gameplay, a two to four player split screen Twinkle Circuit Mode should be implemented. Note: Multi-player fishing, snowboarding, and sand hill boarding should also be implemented.
    • In Emerald Coast, with Sonic, if Sonic reaches the top of the level, and walks between any two bridges, Sonic floats or stands in midair. Sonic must only float if a gush of wind or a fan appears below him.
    • In Casinopolis, the level depicts gambling.
    • In Casinopolis, in the Shower Room, with Sonic, if Sonic takes a shower, Sonic appears to take a shower with Tails.
    • One of the stages in the game is called Lost World.
    • In Station Square, in the shop with the egg, the user's character replaces the egg with an egg-shaped rock to avoid the alarm. According to SEGA Standards, the game must be free of content that might incite misbehavior, crime and anti-social behavior in youth.
    • In the Sonic World, the NPC's are mostly human. To add variety, there should be more non human NPC's.
Note: An example of different character's
that would be nice to see would be
      characters from the arcade game
"Sonic The Fighters" and the 32X game
      "Knuckles Chaotix".
    • In Casinopolis, in Nights Pinball, if Sonic retrieves all five Ideya Gems, the user only receives a Ring Bonus. To enhance user gratification, the Ideya Catcher should be destroyed and Nights should fly around the upper playfield if Sonic retrieves all five Ideya Gems.
    • If the user presses no buttons, the user's character performs few animations. To enhance aesthetic appeal, the user's character should perform multiple animations such as a Waiting Animation, Yawning Animation, Angry Animation, and a Cool Sunglasses Animation.

And among some of the things that were apparently fixed:

    • The directions for uploading a Chao are very confusing. To decrease user confusion, the directions should be simplified so that very young children can understand easily.
    • On the Internet, in Community/Chao Garden/Chao Daycare, below the "Leave your Chao" button, if the following text appears: "Note: Press the above button and you will be shown "Would you like to receive a cookie?" when this appears press OK", and the user presses the Leave Your Chao button, no cookie message appears. A cookie message must appear the user presses the Leave your Chao button.
    • During any Demo, no "DEMO PLAY" text appears. According to SEGA Standards, the text "DEMO PLAY" must appear during any Demo.

I don't know, I thought this would just be interesting to look at again considering all the recent developments in SADX hacking. Check out the wiki to download the file and see if there's anything else interesting.
  3. Super Sonic Spin Attack/Jump

    12 June 2008 - 08:05 PM

So recently, it was discovered that there was no such thing as a "spindash", but there is a "Spin Dash". The original name for the attack, from the Sonic 2 US manual , is actually the "Super Dash Attack." Sonic 3 calls it the "Spin Dash Attack" and Sonic & Knuckles calls it the "Spin Dash." So because of that, the article has been renamed Spin Dash because that is its most well-known name, and a reference to its original Sonic 2 name was made at the beginning of the article

Now another problem is what jumping is called. In Sonic 1 it is called the "Super Sonic Spin Attack." In Sonic 2, it is called "spin jump" (no caps). In Sonic 3, it is called the "Super Spin Attack." In Sonic & Knuckles, it is simply called "Jump." So the first question is, what is the jump attack's most well-known name, and what should it be referred to as in an article?

The second question: the Sonic 3 manual calls jump "Super Spin Attack," but the Sonic 2 manual says the "Super Spin Attack" describes the attack Sonic makes when he's rolling in a ball on the ground and when he jumps from that roll. The Wiki has two articles: Spin jump and Super Spin Attack. So we need to figure out how these articles should be combined, and what the best way is to explain the different namings among games for the same attacks (and same name for different attacks).
