Java at the very least can be compiled to native code via gcj and there are a few commerical compilers that can do it as awell. That being said, I find Java is fairly ill suited for making a game since none of its graphic toolkits are really oriented for that purpose.
While the machosistic side of me would love the idea of an 680x0 to x86 ASM port, reimplementation in C/C++ would clear up the legality of the project, and make it easier for others contribute. If the main goal is to have a direct ASM -> C/C++ port, then C is a better language since C++ objects won't fit that well over the existing code.
I'm interested in working on this project though; I have experience working on 2-D based game engines. -

Uh ... this might just be me, but I don't need the CD for Sonic and Knuckles collection - it works fine without it, and I never modded it. -

Well, what if you leave out the member database. If a post exists with no user exists, everyone becomes just unregistered guests. Also, MS Access (in theory, not pratice) could be used as the database backend. -

Simon, how about an SQL version of this. It would be better for me if I could just load an SQL dummy thing, log in after creating a default password (aka wipe all personal info from the database), and then I can search and make notes in invidual topics. -

Stupid Question, but did you check the Spike bug (aka Sonic hits a spike thing, falls backwards onto another spike thing, and dies instead of going blinky like)
