Sonic Colors's copypasted act areas
16 September 2012 - 08:38 PM
So I pretty much 100% Sonic Colors apart from S ranks. Got super sonic etc, even finished an Egg Shuttle run. Going through said Egg Shuttle run made me realize how many exact level locations are reused between acts. Like an act would end in a certain area but another later act begins in that area, same geometry and everything. Or one of the mini acts takes place in a part of one of the bigger acts, with only a heavy object location change.
Is each zone and its various acts all one geometry layout file or something? I don't know how the programming of the game works or how it is set up, or what the best terms would be to what I am describing. -

The common reuse of words in Zone names
03 August 2012 - 11:32 AM
Instead of talking about for example Green Hill, we are going to talk about Green. And Hill. And how there are a bunch of reused zone words. Apart from direct and slight duplicates ("Green Hills," "Neo Green Hill" and "Mecha Green Hill") there is Green Grove and Green Forest. Then you have the ones that are the offshoot color of Green, like Emerald Hill, Turquoise Hill and Great Turquoise. Oh man, HILL.
It is also interesting that all it takes is a slight name change for a different feel to the zone, one that is its own thing. One worded zones are rare, but even then they are reused many times later on in future zones ("Marble," "Labyrinth," "Starlight," "Metropolis"). Casino Night is different than Carnival Night, and is also different to Casino Paradise. All it took was a one word change! Speaking of Carnival Night, you switch it around and get Night Carnival. That mental image in your head suddenly changed completely to the Rush level, but the words themselves are the same!
I always liked this approach to level naming, I don't know why. And it is so easy! Most of them are "Adjective Noun Zone." You could set up a randomizer following that formula and get coherent zone names every time.
So talk about those zone names. -
Volcano Valley Music Mixup
03 July 2012 - 12:47 AM
So I was helping my good pal Lighthead with his music section.
I ripped the Sonic 3D Blast PC/Saturn music right from my old PC disc for him to use. I then started to listen to the soundtrack and when I got ot Volcano Valley I noticed something startling. Act 1 and Act 2 are switched! In short they are mislabeled. I thought my memory was playing crazy tricks on me, so I replayed through the entire game and sure enough I was right. The one with the extra horns is act 2, not act 1.
This is a problem, since even YOU GUYS got it wrong.
The whole mixup is even spreading misinformation.

I know in the end it isn't a big deal, but shouldn't this be fixed?
