  1. The SEGA PlayStation

    12 July 2013 - 09:50 PM

    http://www.mcvuk.com...vs-sega/0118482

Read an interesting article comparing this years E3 (Sony Vs Microsoft with little show from Nintendo) to the very first E3 (Sony vs SEGA with little show from Nintendo). What caught my eye is something I'd never actually heard of before.

    Quote

“Sony came to us after they had been rebuffed by Nintendo,” remembers Kalinske.

“They had wanted Nintendo to use some technology that they had, and Nintendo instead chose to work with Philips. That really annoyed Sony. Olaf Olafsson [Sony Electronic Publishing President] and Micky Schulhof [President of Sony America] came to my office and said: ‘Tom, we really don't like Nintendo. You don't like Nintendo. We have this little studio down in Santa Monica [Imagesoft] working on video games, we don't know what to do with it, we'd like Sega's help in training our guys. And we think the optical disc will be the best format.’

“Well I agreed with them, I thought CDs would be the next format as well. But in those days nobody knew how to programme on optical discs. So I said, “Ok. Let's combine our efforts. Let's finance Imagesoft, and let's finance this little developer called Digital Pictures, which seemed to be furthest along in knowing how to programme on optical disc.’ And they financed three titles from Digital Pictures and we did as well.

“So our relationship with Sony was very close and very tight. We together worked a lot of these things out. And Sega of America and Sony were both convinced that the next platform had to use optical discs. We had been working on this CD ROM attachment to the Genesis [Mega CD], which we knew really wasn't adequate, but it taught us how to make games on this format.

“We had the Sony guys and our engineers in the United States come up with specs for what this next optical-based hardware system would be. And with these specs, Olafsson, Schulhof and I went to Japan, and we met with Sony's Ken Kutaragi.

“He said it was a great idea, and as we all lose money on hardware, let's jointly market a single system – the Sega/Sony hardware system – and whatever loss we make, we split that loss.”

Kalinske loved the sound of this deal. As Sega made some of the biggest games in the world, he was certain it would be Sega that would make the most money from this deal. All he needed was the Sega Board to say yes.

“Next we went to Nakayama [Sega President] and the Board at Sega, and they basically turned me down. They said: ‘That's a stupid idea, Sony doesn't know how to make hardware. They don't know how to make software either. Why would we want to do this?’ That is what caused the division between Sega and Sony and caused Sony to become our competitor and launch its own hardware platform.”

    - Tom Kalinske CEO of SEGA of America from 1990 - 1996

We've heard many times about the deal between Sony and Nintendo that fell apart when Nintendo decided to work with Phillips (and we all know what came of that...). I know they had some partnerships with making games, but this is the first I've ever heard though that Sony actually went to SEGA afterwards to try and create a CD system together. Basically Kalinske was all for the idea, but when they went to Japan it was turned down. I must say what was said about Sony not being able to make hardware or software was quite funny. I'm curious if the system would have ended up more like the Saturn or the PlayStation.

The whole article is interesting though and talks about some of the competition between SEGA and Sony back in the day so I suggest reading it!

“Sony played a lot of pranks on us. They deflated my inflatable Sonic character that was at the front of the show. In previous shows against Nintendo, I used to put flyers and leaflets under the doors of retailers’ rooms the night before the show, announcing our new products and pricing, so that Nintendo didn't have time to react to it."

This is probably the best bit of the rest of the article. =P
  2. Sonic 1 (2013 - iOS/Android) Post-Release Bugs/Fixes/Suggestions

    16 May 2013 - 06:21 PM

Figure the thread was helpful for when Sonic CD (2011) was released, and this might be a nice way to organize bugs, fixes, etc. for Sonic 1 and/or when Sonic 2 is released, and leave the other thread to reviews and general discussion.

For my bugs I'm going off the Android version and I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with a mostly stock ROM.

    Problems:
    • High Hardware Usage? - Phone gets extremely hot when playing. Did not experience with Sonic CD or with 99% of other games I've played.
    • Static sound plays after spring sound.

    Suggestions:
    • When spindashing under one crusher in MZ to quickly get under it I always get crushed by the the one after it unlike in the original game. Can this be tweaked a bit?

I've only played GHZ and MZ, but will update this post if I come across some more.
  3. Good guides to get started on Genesis Repros?

    25 March 2013 - 11:57 PM

So me and a buddy have been doing NES reproductions for a while, and have done around 15 games (mostly english translations of Famicom games). Now there's a few Genesis games we're wanting to do, but it seems to be quite a bit harder to find Genesis stuff info since it seems more people just want you to pay for a cart to be made instead of sharing information. Anyone have any pointers or suggestions to get started on Genesis?
  4. Ultimate Dreamcast Sale on Amazon

    22 March 2013 - 11:54 AM

    Amazon Page

I really don't know why they're calling it the Ultimate Dreamcast Collection, but either way it's a steal if you want digital downloads of these games.

Dreamcast Collection (Amazon Download - No Steam keys) - Sonic Adventure DX, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5 Part 2, and SEGA Bass Fishing
    Jet Set Radio (Steam)
    Nights (Steam)
    Sonic Adventure 2 (Steam)
    Sonic Generations (Steam)

I'm still debating if I'll buy it. I already have SA1/2 on PS3 and Generations on PC. Would like to have JSR and Nights though.
  5. Cheetahmen 1 from Action 52 prototype being sold as a repro...

    11 June 2012 - 07:50 PM

    http://www.cheetahme...e-Creation.html

So apparently this went up for sale recently, and at first it seems like something awesome. A lost version of one of the worst games of all time, and it comes in a cool repro box with a t-shirt and comic?!

Well I decided to do some reading on this because something just seems weird with the incredibly high price tags and promises of it to go up in value.

First off right on the website there is something strange. "A SECOND GAME TO PLAY/TRADE" So this release is actually limited to 2,000 and not the 1,500 you advertise?

Second thing came from some old Cheetahmen 3 fan game forum: http://suckerfreegam....php?topic=38.0
The guy selling these actually registered and posted. Besides the fact the guy seems like a dick apparently this game comes from an Action 52 prototype (I'm assuming is unreleased). So he edited this Action 52 prototype to remove the other games, and you pay $200 for a 2 level game. Wait 2 levels for $200-500??? Yeah supposedly that's all there is according to this video review:

It gets even better though! Apparently the gameplay in this prototype is almost identical to the game Ooze in the released version of Action 52.

I guess I'm pretty pissed about this because a buddy of mine was considering buying this, and I think I talked him out of it after I did some research. The fool was going to sell his CIB copy of Musha to get this! So is it just me or does this seem kind of scammy and like an asshole who found a Action 52 prototype is just trying to cash-in on the value of Cheetahmen 2.
