  1. Sonic Running on Atari 2600

    23 March 2015 - 04:01 PM

Or in this games case, "Zippy the Porcupine":

I think this is pretty impressive for an Atari to do.
  2. Music Oddity with Sonic 3D Blast PC

    07 September 2014 - 10:04 PM

So, on a whim I decided to boot up my copy of Sonic 3D Blast on my PC. It wasn't a new copy however.

    Posted Image

It was this one. The original 1997 release. I figured it was far too old for Win 7 to run it so I booted up my XP Virtual Machine.

The game installed fine and began running, but I noticed something I remembered very well: The music in-game wasn't working. The intro cutscene plays properly and has music, but the music in-game would never work. I know this isn't an oddity I had with just the Virtual Machine. It also did this when I tried booting this up on computers years ago. I figured it was my disc or the old program.

After sucessfully running the game, I wondered if the game would even boot at all on a Win 7. So I decided to try it for shits and giggles. IT WORKED. This 1997 game installed on Win 7 just fine with no 32-bit errors! Amazing! The game went 640x480 and proceeded to play the intro cutscene fine.

And then the magic happened. THE IN-GAME MUSIC ACTUALLY WORKS.

Wait, What?! The music wouldn't play on an XP or Win 95/98 system but will on Win 7?! WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?

Does anyone else have a clue why this would happen?
  3. Super GameBoy on N64 using Transfer Pack?!

    06 August 2014 - 09:14 AM

Not sure how many people are interested in N64 hacking, but this caught my eye in recent memory.

    Copy-Pasting my previous explination:

We may soon have a working Super GameBoy on the N64 using the Transfer Pack.

Some hackers have been messing with the N64 Transfer Pack and Pokemon Stadium earlier this year. One, named Mezmorize decided to try and boot a game that wasn't Pokemon into Pokemon Stadium using the Game Boy Tower. In short, he got it to work! By using a flash cart, modifying the game's header, and making it look like Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Stadium took it and ran the game. Crazily it also added the Super Gameboy borders to boot:

The game crashes after this cutscene though. So he tried to use a simpler game. He had to modify the game even more, making it the same size and header as the Pokemon ROM. It too booted:

One more video from Zoinkity shows Tetris and Link's Awakening running (with some graphics issues):

So as you can see, we are not too far off of this working. Any game can run on the system either of two ways: The GameBoy ROM has to be hacked to look like a PKMN game, or Pokemon Stadium itself needs to be modified to remove the GameBoy game checks from the GameBoy Tower, which in theory could be done by Gameshark codes.

I think this is really neat. What do you all think?
  4. Sonic Boom Moves to NYC

    22 May 2014 - 12:09 PM

Just Announced on the Sega Blog:

    Quote

Every year, The Summer of Sonic team dreams of new ways to excite and inspire like-minded Sonic the Hedgehog fans, with large-scale conventions that aim to bring people together under a common theme.

Due to the nature of how the annual event is organised, each Summer of Sonic event hinges on the availability of key team players, as they help build the show in their spare time – alongside SEGA personnel who also must work around their daily duties.

With this in mind, it is after a lot of consideration that we have decided to put Summer of Sonic on hiatus for 2014. During this hiatus, we will take stock of the things we have accomplished with SEGA and then decide when we will be able to return for another round of Sonic excitement.

The team would like to express our sincere thanks for the continued support of our fellow Sonic fans, as well as our apologies for any disappointment this news may cause.

Since its debut in 2008, the Summer of Sonic has been a truly pioneering event, entertaining thousands of fellow Sonic the Hedgehog fans from all corners of the world with the mantra of providing a convention by the fans, for the fans.

Its creation also marks a significant milestone in the video games industry – these past six years this small team of adoring fans have enjoyed an extremely close working partnership with the company responsible for the products and characters they grew up with and love. This close interaction between brand and community is unprecedented to this day, and shows SEGA as a company ahead of the curve when it comes to fan engagement.

As such, the team would like to thank SEGA and the Sonic Team for its support for the convention – both past, present and future.

Also announced along with it is that Sonic Boom will be in NYC this year and will take place on October 4th.

I'm happy that Sonic Boom got moved closer to me, but no SOS for the UK is pretty bad. What do you all think?
