It's not like Classic Mario always looked like that, it's just that both examples are the same piece of artwork from 1985, only mirrored.Mario had some slight revisions but none to the point where people say Classic Mario and Modern Mario. Not to mention the extreme pudgy Mario would just look awful in 64.
But then again you linked to Super Mario USA, a game that isn't even an actual Mario game to begin with.
Both Land and World had slimmer and thinner Mario.

Regardless of being an actual Mario game, the SMBUSA artwork is similar to the Super Mario Bros. official artwork. I'd still say that 'Classic Mario' has a higher body-to-head ratio, and thicker limbs.
True, however, I only brought up the subject to point out that character design evolution is a common thing. Its not like other video game characters never change how they look, its just that SEGA has yet to come up with a perfect way to represent Sonic in 3D. -

In Topic: So how has Sonic affected your life?

Physically, Sonic has a lot to do with my current addiction to Parkour.
This, but I can only backflip off a wall and pull myself up ledges, none of that crazy-ass stuff real freerunners can do.
Eh, takes time. I've been at it for a year, I still can't bring myself to do a flip. I can vault well though, and I've climbed over a 10' wall. Still waiting for the day I find a loop-de-loop to run up. =P -

I've got to say that as far as an evolution of Sonic's design goes, Unleashed's model (and Brawl's for that matter) is quite nice. Personally I thought they went a little overboard with the sidemouth in cutscenes (dat face), but overall, I agree that it obtains a cartoony atmosphere in a 3D environment. Though I wouldn't mind seeing a cel-shaded rendition one of these days...
Oh, and on the subject of Mario not changing in design...

Current design Mario is taller, has longer and thinner limbs, is less pudgy, and has a lower body-to-head ratio, not to mention a total switch of shirt and overalls color. Coincidence, or simply a change in the accepted design of the time period?
I personally agree that the attitude is what really kills Sonic now as opposed to Sonic then. Mario has always acted like Mario, after all. -

As ever, the quality of one's work can be shown by how they use their tools, not so much that they used the 'right' or 'wrong' tool. There will be several people who download this and use it to make quick click 'hacks'. But there will be those who use this, go in and determine what it changes, and learn from it. There will also be those who decide that this is not enough and go to learning ASM for what they want. The fakers will be blasted into oblivion, and those who work hard will reap reward.
Good work on the app.
