  1. Which of these old Windows XP-era video cards is the better one?

    05 May 2015 - 03:39 PM

I have 2 video cards from my old PCs and I'm trying to figure out which one is better for my emulation/older PC gaming XP computer. I have:

NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro (Microsoft Corporation)

    and

    S3 ViRGE GX/DX.

Bonus question: in the future if I wanted to buy the best possible video card a Pentium 4 motherboard running XP could handle, what should I get?
  2. Collecting fully complete Sonic games.

    16 March 2013 - 05:05 AM

Coinciding with my goal to collect all I can for my favorite games, I would like to start this topic to answer some questions that the Wiki cannot in its current state. While it provides basic information of what the different box art and cartridges look like, it doesn't provide information regarding other details such as which editions of the games came with what posters, registration cards and such. If there are people here on Retro who have bought these games new and kept everything since breaking the seal, they will probably be the most helpful in figuring these things out. This topic is meant to be picture heavy because I intend to save the pictures I come across for posting on buy/sell/trade forums to explain exactly what I am searching for and intend to buy. This would benefit me as well as others because #1 it allows me to get what I'm looking for without paying top dollar for sealed copies (and then shamelessly opening them & making sealed collectors mad) and #2 in the process other people will become knowledgable about the history of the items' packaging and be made aware of any guides or extras they might not know about. If it would keep the forum cleaner to just provide links to pictures rather than embedding them, we could do that. I will start out with pictures and edit them to become links once I move onto the next game in question.

As of now, no US REV 01 carts have been found in the copies I've added to my collection so far.

I have learned that different posters have come with this game, but now I am starting to wonder if certain minor variants always came with a certain poster and whether or not you can match up a loose poster with the correct copy of the game just by checking the printing variations on the box, manual and cartridge.

I would like to start with questions about the US Version of Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis. I have pictures of particular posters to identify and other questions.

First off, we know that the most common variant of Sonic 1 in the USA is the NOT FOR RESALE that was bundled with the Genesis Model 1 in 1993.

Do all of these have the REV 00 rom without the parallax scrolling effects?

So this should be familiar to everyone:

EDIT: I don't own the one in this picture, but this one looks like a Printed In Japan variant. It may or may not be though.

According to an unboxing video I found on youtube, a teenage guy opened a shrink wrapped copy of the game and all you see above is what came in the box.

That means while technically the following posters came with this game via the Genesis bundle, they were actually packaged in the plastic bag that contains the Genesis system manual. According to most unboxing videos it seems like each Genesis came with up to three ads: one poster with Genesis games, one poster with Game Gear games and one Sega Classics sports ad.

So far these are the five possible posters that me and other people have found within Sonic 1 Genesis bundles.:

Poster #1 (Sonic 1 art on front/ToeJam & Earl poster on the back):

Poster #2 (Sonic on front, folds out to Golden Axe II poster):
    Posted Image

Poster #3 (Game Gear on Front, Jurassic Park poster on back)
    Posted Image

Poster #4 (Game Gear "Get a Grip" on front, Joe Montana Football poster on back)
    Posted Image

Poster #5 (Batman on front, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Are You Up 2 It?" poster on back)

Has anyone found anything different than mentioned here when buying a Sonic 1 Genesis 1 bundle?

Next up we have the Sonic 1 plain:

EDIT: This looks more like the Printed in Japan variant I have, but unlike mine it has patent info below the address on the back of the box.

I am assuming this variant of the game is the less common original release?

Were these still produced in this form after the bundled NOT FOR RESALE version came out?

Did all of these come with the same posters inside? And does anyone have any pictures of the extras that came inside this box along with the manual?

Do all of these also have the REV 00 rom (no parallax scrolling effects), or do some of them have the REV 01 rom (parallax scrolling effects added to clouds and water)? Or is the REV 01 rom only found in the "Classic" version?

    Which brings me to this:
    Posted Image

What do the cartridge and manual bundled with this version look like?

Do they say Not For Resale just because Sega quit printing the regular version of the label or did they keep the non-bundle Sonic 1's plain? I have seen 1 opened copy on ebay, but the cartridge is the Not For Resale version which makes me think it's just an incorrecty repackaged copy. Why would it say Not for Resale on the game when it's in a Classics box?

Does this come with any posters or inserts? If so, what kinds have you found?

Again, are any of these cartridges REV 00 still or is this the point at which they changed to REV 01 in the US?

This guide covers four games: Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis), Sonic the Hedgehog (Game Gear), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis):

Are there any other branded guides for these same games or is this THE one?

If anyone can clear up any of these questions, I'll thank you to answer any ones that you can. In the edit I will rephrase the questions into statements saying "This IS what comes with this" and such.

After a bit of buying copies of the game and saving pictures of ebay auctions, I have actually been able to confirm the existence of many minor variants within each of the three US releases. Most of these differences seem to depend on whether the copy of said variant was manufactured and printed in Japan or USA. Examples of what I have in my possession:

Came with the green poster that has the "Game Gear Get a Grip" page.
  3. Sonic Mobius

    08 July 2011 - 05:13 AM

I used the topic search on this site and nothing came up for this title so here it goes:

    Sonic Mobius Cached Facebook Page

Is anyone here familiar with this fangame that is nearing completion? I joined this facebook page and spoke with the author of the fangame and he said he hopes to be 100% finished with the game by late summer or early fall. He has not released a demo for a very long time, wanting to just get it all done and be done with it. What is strange is that it seems I cannot access the normal facebook page for the game anymore. I just get redirected to my homepage.

The artwork for the zones looks great to me. I am just hoping the physics will be as good as the graphics look. Take a look at those screenshots.

And look they even give Special Thanks to Tweaker for inspiration.
  4. Opinions on Sonic Blast for Game Gear

    06 September 2010 - 05:55 PM

Ok so a lot of people don't like this Sonic game as much as the other four sidescrolling Sonic games before it on Game Gear. I found it quite enjoyable as it's the Game Gear's equivalent to having a Sonic & Knuckles since those are the characters you get.

The problem I am coming across is it's rarity. Since it was one of the last Game Gear games ever to be released and most people moved on from the system and didn't buy it, it seems to be harder to find, especially complete.

Every time I try to look online for a complete copy of the game, I'm lucky if I even see more than a few loose copies. Are the box and instructions for this game really that much rarer than other game gear games?

But let's go even beyond that. It seems most Game Gear games are harder to find complete than most other common systems I've seen (unless the particular title had been re-released by majesco like Sonic Spinball). Either everyone always threw their boxes away or somebody is hoarding them all for themselves.

So what does everyone think about Game Gear in general as a system, about Sonic Blast as a video game, or have to say about the CIB shortage when it comes to collecting for the system? I'm curious how many other people are having as much of a problem finding the complete game as I am. It can't be as bad as the US copy of Sonic 1 for SMS can it?
  5. Sega Saturn and Maybe Dreamcast Emulation

    27 March 2010 - 09:03 PM

Laptops are so much cheaper than they used to be these days. My old 2Ghz Dell Inspiron has fallen apart gradually (broken headphone jack, blue screens of death, dropped it and broke plastic that holds the screen upright, the cord connecting the screen to the inside of the computer is broken somewhere so the thing has to be plugged into a monitor. and now the keyboard is having weird typing issues.

I say it's time to just upgrade. Now this computer was pretty good. It could emulate Nintendo 64 games like the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time alright, but Nintendo DS, Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar and of course Sega Dreamcast emulation were no good. They were all running at very slow speeds.

Since my main focus of using computers for gaming is emulation, I'm trying to find the cheapest sleek-looking laptop I can with an HD screen and HD graphics capabilities, but is powerful enough to run these harder to use emulators at full speed. All the computers I see in local stores are 64 bit with Windows 7.

The RAM is either 3GB or 4GB but It doesn't say how many GHz the processors are. I believe the Atari Jaguar emulator "Jagulator" requires at least a 3.2GHz processor to run at the correct speed and the same was for the Saturn Emulator SSF.

If I can order a laptop online for under $700 that might be the way to go.

I am just wondering if anyone on here knows of a link to where I could buy a laptop that suits my needs. I have had Dell and eMachines computers break on me so I am also unsure if they are trustworthy manufacturers or if I just had bad luck.

I would get a Mac but they can't run most of the emulators and games so I'm thinking Windows 7 is my best bet. Not many developers make emulators for Linux.
