  1. Project64k VE Netplay Setup? [solved!]

    13 May 2015 - 02:22 AM

    Hello!
Tonight I've been working on setting up a small Kaillera server for myself and my friends on Skype so that we can play Mario Party together. Not all of said friends are super computer-savvy and one of said friends is running a Mac, so simply starting a server and leaving how to connect to it up to everyone else isn't really an option here. :P Anyway, I searched a bit online and it looks like Project64k VE is a popular emulator that can be run on a Mac through WINE relatively easy through the use of this third-party Winebottler application. However, I've run into a big of a snag:

I can start the Kaillera server without issue and when I join the localhost of 127.0.0.1 it works, but I simply cannot join from my real-world IP. The port that is listed in the kaillerasrv.conf is 27888 and I've forwarded that, but it's still not working. Further searching has shown that the Kaillera server may need any of a wide variety of ports so I've opened up the rather large range of 27800 to 28000. However, I still cannot join my own server via real-world IP no matter what I try! I am rather certain that I have the ports forwarded correctly; the PC that is running the Kaillera server formerly ran my small private Minecraft server so it still has a static IP of 192.168.1.55 set and that is the one that I used when opening the ports in my router. Additionally, a simple check at http://www.yougetsig...ols/open-ports/ shows that the ports are indeed open.

    So... any ideas?
  2. Unknown SEGA Bell Slot Machine

    12 November 2014 - 01:59 PM

While I was going through some mostly-local classifieds listings I came across an older SEGA slot machine. It appears to be a Sega Bell slot machine, but the one documented on the Wiki has a red color scheme while this one has has a green and gold one. Between the Sega Retro article and a quick google search, it appears that there are four known variants - Types A through D - and only Types A and D have a color picture. Adding to this, they're both using a different color scheme. I have neither the funds to purchase this machine nor to make the trip to pick it up at this time, but does anyone have any additional information about this unit?

Edit: On looking at the pictures more closely I'm reasonably certain that it's a Type D with different colors
  3. Uses for a second GbEth port?

    21 November 2013 - 11:36 PM

    Hello!
Quite some time ago, I was running MythTV on a computer directly hooked up to my living room TV. A switch to a local provider that only does IPTV in our area and nothing over analog coax negated this usage, so I reformatted it and installed Windows 7. At some point while I've ran this hardware setup, I had strange rebooting issues. Over the months nearly-year that I've been running this particular setup I've added a separate graphics card and a PCI Express NIC. This did not fully mitigate the issue and I tabled it for later. This weekend I've had some time to look at the computer and the CPU temperature was gradually rising until it reached a level where the OS would freeze. Starting from square one, I grabbed some canned air and blew out the fans and it has been running rock-solid and less than half of the previous temperature.

Now that I've resolved this issue, I believe that it would be safe to use the onboard NIC, but I'm at a loss as to what exactly I can use it for! I've ready of teaming/bonding two ports, but the Cat5 cable just runs to an 8-port unmanaged switch. While I do have an open port, I do not believe that there is any way to configure said switch for this. From there, the 8-port Gigabit switch is connected by a decent-length ethernet cable to a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band router next to my PC. Unfortunately, the Netgear is only 10/100 on the four LAN ports, so any theoretical speed gains from even the gigabit equipment - let alone a machine with 2Gb thoroughput - would be wasted.

    I've skimmed a few suggestions online and the best solutions seem to be bonding the ports, running a VM through one of the ethernet ports, or attaching a NAS to one of the ethernet ports. The first I've covered above. The second I'm not sure sure about; I currently have no Virtual Machines running on the server, but eventually I may want to run something like the game servers in a separate VM so that they do not affect file transfers, I guess? I think the 10/100 LAN ports on the router hinder even this use, though... For the third usage, I do not have a NAS device attached at this time, but if I eventually attach one would it be difficult to configure it so that all of the space simply shows up as extra space on the server's shares? I'm kind of dabbling with territory that I'm only vaguely familiar with here, and I don't have any NAS equipment to play around with and figure this out! ^^;

Are there any other uses, or are any of the above worth the effort? I'd really rather not remove the PCI Express NIC as I'm out of expansion slot covers at this time but I'm also at a loss when it comes to how I can use the equipment I have available!
  4. Best multi-emulator frontend?

    20 July 2013 - 06:58 PM

    Hello!
For several years I had a cheap PC running MythTV. I upgraded the parts over the years and even did a near-complete replace at one point, but eventually my roommates and I switched cable providers to one that provides encrypted content to STBs over ethernet so the PC was gathering dust. My intention is to turn the decently-powerful computer into a file server, an emulation station, and possibly a video player. The first will be simple; I have two 1TB drives and two 3TB drives in there, once I have more files than basic OS stuff on it I can just share out the storage drives. The last one is also simple; I have VLC installed and running and I just need to move my videos from my backups over to this computer.

The second has me stuck. Sure, I can install emulators with ease and I have no shortage of controllers and controller adapters. However, I would also like to run a frontend that looks good from the couch. I recall talking with CoolJerk on IRC several times as he's gone down this path before and I believe that he recommended MediaPortal at the time, but I have no information on what it's current features are vs. Boxee or basic XBMC. What I really want is a frontend that stores metadata such as release date, genre, publisher, and so on, preferably pulled from an online source to save me the time it takes to type it in for each game. It was fun playing with Linux, but in order to support more games I'm running Windows 7 64-bit now. Support for Steam games from the frontend would be a nice plus, but if that isn't available then I can just add a "Steam" launcher to the consoles page and then have it run in Big Picture mode. I also have access to a Netflix account so something that will allow me to access that service without a keyboard/mouse would be a neat plus, but some quick searching on an independent program to do so has dampened my hopes of finding a frontend with a plugin that supports this service.

Do any of you have any recommendations on what I should use?
  5. Loading Music Onto Another's iPod

    20 July 2012 - 11:48 PM

    Hello there!
Recently I purchased Linkin Park's Living Things album through Amazon's download service for a very close friend of mine, and I am interested in helping her move it to her iPod. I do not have any firmware information; all she has told me is that it is a 32GB model of some sort.
Currently she is using it for a few small things that she would really rather not have deleted, but from everything I've read online my best bet is to use iTunes to transfer the songs over. In Apple's infinite stupidity, they have decided that "synching" your Music Library between your computer and your portable music player is the only option for consumers (despite it being a rather terrible solution!), and doing so from a PC that does not have the contents of the iPod currently on it will erase said contents on iPod as part of the "Synch" operation. I also have a few other things I would like to transfer to the iPod for her as well; mostly opening themes from Japanese cartoons and video games.

My question is thus: Is there any way I can copy this music to her iPod without erasing the content she already has on it? Google searches have suggested that there is -something- involving creating a custom playlist, disabling automatic synch, and then only synching across the playlist. However, as I have no Apple products of my own I cannot do a test run with unimportant data so I'm turning to you all for confirmation that this method works! Are there any details that I'm missing? Are there any little things - no matter how obvious they seem - that I should watch out for?
