I read the thread after we put out an update.
No, we haven't asked directly for feedback but when a point with merit is made we take it into consideration.
Obviously, not everyone will be thrilled with the art direction for a given piece. That's to be expected. When I drew the concept that became the final branches design last year I knew that would be the case but we already had so many revisions it was past time for the project's leadership to step in and move things forward for the asset.
Regardless of the history we've had with Sonic Retro, quite a few people here still have a vested interest, so it's good to hear your thoughts for better or worse. I make no promises one way or another, but both Vincent and myself have already approved changes suggested from outside the team.
As a general knowledge bit, we're planning to have three playable zones in the next public release, two of which are done and the third is nearing completion. I'm not going to provide a timeline until we're ready to put it up as an official announcement on Facebook.
Cheers,

Hey P3DRO, we get it. You didn't like S2HD. Unfortunately for you, over seven thousand other people disagreed on the facebook page. We developed our art direction and we stuck to it. I think you can stop whining about it now.
You're doing a fantastic job with this Sonica. Keep up the great work. At the end of the day, this is your project above all else. Don't give in to people who would nitpick it when you've got a firm vision for what you're after. -

Since it's already been posted about a few times, let me go on the record to say that only Emerald Hill and Hill Top were ever actively worked on; as the two shared tiles, it made the most sense that once EHZ was nearly completed that we tackle HTZ with most of the same assets already in place. That said, only the level tiles, the background, and the badniks/boss were really in a releasable state. Scanline99 had just finished a concept for the level's lava at roughly the same time it became apparent to us that there was no set answer on when we would even have a playable build of the game internally. That put the kibosh on any further artwork creation. Without a guarantee that even the finished work would be seen, it was deemed unfair to keep others working based on a series of unfulfilled 'deadlines' with no tangible result.
One of our regrets as a team was just how much we were all looking forward to making Casino Night light up like never before. I would still love to see some talented individuals make a solid effort on that front. -

He wasn't paid anything, but the principle is the same. Another one of the major lessons learned. -

steveswede,
There's nothing stopping Synergy from continuing that independently. Throughout last summer and fall I was in contact with him, but I haven't heard from him since before the holidays. I know he has a working engine that can support 3D models, and I created 3D models of the main three characters to be used. We ran into numerous problems importing the rigged characters from the modeling package I was using to the one he had access to, and never found a good workaround for it. I'd certainly love to see Synergy's work put to use in the future, given the amount of time he spent on it. To my knowledge the only thing keeping that from happening now is available time for him and someone who can work out the problems with getting animated models to function properly in his engine.
