On my phone, the game works fine, but on my Galaxy Tab 4, both Sonic 1 and 2 have a circumstantial input delay. If I'm not pressing anything on the screen, then new inputs (d-pad or jumping, pausing seems to work fine) take about a half-second to register. However, if I'm already pressing the screen, like holding the jump button or a d-pad direction, the inputs register more or less immediately, like they usually do.
I haven't even beaten Emerald Hill on the Tab 4 yet, due to trying to fix the input delay, but it's not that intrusive in regular gameplay (yet, at least). The special stages, on the other hand, are a massive pain. Has anyone else gotten this, and if so, does anyone know how to fix it?
Try this; Settings -> Accessibility -> Vision (Touchwiz version dependent iirc)
Turn off Magnification Gestures if it's on. -

Given that there is space on the level map, could the ball have been meant to be pushed on to bridges, destroy them and open up new areas?
Doubtful. I THINK the waterfalls that are placed at those locations are objects. The ball is most likely an extensive physics test.
Not sure what them being objects has to do with what I was saying, but if it was an extensive physics test, does that mean the bridge would have bent under its weight like Sonic running over it? What would have happened if both were on the bridge at different spots? Does the engine have any kind of link to the bridge ever being able to bend in multiple spots at once?
What I mean is that the waterfalls you were referring to that would have hypothetically been there in the beta were background tiles, the others were objects. Don't quote me on this though, its been a LONG LONG time since I've modified anything in Sonic 1.
And for the second part about the bridge, that is a very good question. It's possible that the existence of the ball could have been to test multiple objects on bridges. It could have been there to test a lot of things before Sonic's physics were perfected. My mind wonders so much wondering...
I wasn't saying the waterfall would be affected or anything, just that the bridge could be destroyed leading to an alternate area. It was merely some speculation that popped in my head because of the waterfall that doesn't exist. It would seem to make sense from a game development standpoint (Heavy object breaks platform object that bends a lot when light character is normally on it).
The lack of waterfall could have meant to hint "Hey dude go down here", scrapped because there's no sense in making the player immediately get pushed in to backtracking right after starting the game or for a more technical reason being that perhaps the several objects on screen together (Two of which adhere to physics) was buggy at the time.
Isn't speculation fun?

Page worked fine in Cyberfox o_O
I'd say it's worth it to watch them, it had some good moments.
