Sonic 1 / 2 / 3, S&K -> Sonic CD
GHZ, EHZ, AIZ, MHZ -> PPZ
MZ, ARZ, MGZ, --- -> R2
SYZ, CNZ, CNZ, --- -> CCZ
LZ, ARZ, HCZ, --- -> TTZ
QQZ is more like a mix of ALL levels. MZ, SBZ, MCZ, HPZs (2/S&K) ...
SLZ, CPZ(!), ---, --- -> SSZ
SBZ, MZ, ---. DEZ&FBZ -> BOTH WWZ and MMZ
So, in Sonic 1 all levels are implemented.
Sonic 2 - Unused Hill Top (it's reused EHZ, putting down), Sky Chase and Wing Fortress (do not fit), and Death Egg (just a boss level)
Sonic 3 - Unused Ice Cap (there seems to be NO iced levels in SCD) and Launch Base.
Sonic & Knuckles - Unused Sandopolis (possibly 9TH yet more hidden desert SCD zone???), Sky Sanctuary (does not fit) and The Doomsday (a boss level)
So, it's 99% chance that R2 is a MZ-ruin like zone
(and 1% that there were 9, not 8 zones in development. Also mentioning volcanoes in TTZ) -

I like this thing. BTW, when I set in CNZ2 (with debug) a static monitor, it became... 2P TELEPORT monitor!
And this monitor worked, by teleporting CAMERA to left, then going to Sonic, that became unable to move... -

Sonic 2 Prototype C - maybe SGG Prototype, for Solid Gold Guide, the mag with this proto? (I mean, with THIS level select), like "Nick Arcade Proto" for the show where this proto appeared. -

Well, I think that it was in following order: [DRX'S PROTO], SEGA created (or tried to create) a desert level, named it first "Desert Zone" (on the BANPER sketch), then "Dust Hill", then ideas changed to winter zone, next - to Mystic Cave Zone [OUR PROTO], Dust Hill renamed to Mystic Cave Zone, [FINAL]. If we had more protos, situation would be much more clear.
