As much as I'd love to play that Sonic CD DLC, it's just about time for a brand new "old-school" Sonic game to see the light of day.
You have both skills and artistic talent to make that happen, keeping focus on ports is a delicious waste in my opinion.

to the point that having a community (who just wants to make it happen)
Speaking in name of Team S2HD,
We are very proud hearing back so much appreciation and positive feedback to our art work -It really pays off all the hardships we went through to create a dream game "from fans to fans".
Yes, S2HD could had been much more, yet an unreliable programmer and our lives getting busier in these 4 years won't allow us to, especially when we have to feed our families with work.

It's simply not realistic to even consider to reprise the community work a-la- Hill Top Tree, which took months to end up with nothing done. Not only I am betting by experience it will just end up in an endless nitpick cycle; there will be fights for a cohesive vision until it hits the end of the road, and I lack the time to look after that process.
Everything you see in Alpha Release is entirely made by a strict production chain exploiting years of experience and combined strengths of 2-3 artists.
Study, experiment and find what works best for your art team and you'll achieve incredible results. A set mind and a burning heart with passion can create -literally anything!

You don't need to reverse engineer Alpha Release to save S2HD. As said earlier, If you really wish to prove a point that the community is able to "help S2HD" beside words, jump on the challenge and create an engine supporting HD and 4X graphics of the original Sonic 2. By that time, I'll be glad to evaluate the possibility to promote this new engine by transferring S2HD art pack into that.
Until and IF that happen, please stop begging for art for the sake of continuing S2HD in some hypothetical circumstance.

Volpino, you can actually see all the unused WIP art on the links posted over Facebook news weeks ago:

I lack seeing any point into releasing S2HD assets just to be roughly cannibalized a second after by a plethora of subpar fan-games. It would only blur their quality and uniqueness -if out of the original context they were drawn. Not even mentioning the confusion some kids will generate by 'shopping a bunch of pixels and claim the work as theirs.

If you're going to make a fangame with your own art, it's mandatory to have the ability to draw new original content for it. Take Sonica's latest Sonic frames for an instance: I am sure He is able to draw an entire frameset just by taking inspiration and it will end up being a completely original new game with consistent artstyle.
Additionally, please acknowledge none of the current key-art members (myself included as a character artist), will be making new content for it as properly specified in my previous post.
Even if this position might change on my own personal future, S2HD as you know it now is officially discontinued.
Certain about Scanline99 and CN's present and future resignation from S2HD, with a big question mark on Gambit, Cornet, CK, SnickerSnack and Saxman; "If" there will be a reason to reprise S2HD and consolidate a new teamwork, the fact there isn't an engine supporting it makes this circumstance even harder to happen.
Unwilling to disrespect the immense programming knowledge several users have here, I've never seen a classic Sonic "HD" engine capable to do a quarter of LOst's features and accuracy (except Taxman and Mercury's SFR).

For this reason, before advancing any kind of requests on S2HD's legacy, if any of you programmers believes to have the skills, dedication and cooperative attitude to port "S2HD, in its entirety" into a better open-source HD engine, send me a demo of your engine with Sonic 2 sprites at 4X (including tileset). Until then I'm afraid there isn't much more to talk about.
