In my opinion, character was possibly the biggest fault of Sonic's shields when compared to Mario's suits. Shields only feel like tools. That's totally fine, but when you think of Mario's suits with all that character in comparison, you kind of feel that fun that suits just put in your mind. I'm not suggesting Sonic games should have copied that, it would look cheap, but Sonic Colours definitely added character to its powerups and that definitely added appeal to them, and to the game.

I kinda disagree with this one. While they don't have maybe as much character as Mario's suits, they are designed to complement Sonic in specific. They are balls. He is a ball. I think they suit the aesthetic of the games and are a good fit for Sonic.

I've never really had an issue with Sonic's health system. Makes it a little easy maybe, but it's unique. Besides in a way it's pretty similar to the standard platformer health system. If you were to not collect your rings, you get one hit and then your dead, or 2 hits if you have a shield. Not too different from Mario's power up to normal to small to dead system.

Except that when Mario gets hit, the mushroom he previously had doesn't pop out of him, ready to be re-collected infinitely.

Not yet, anyway. I'd love to see a hack or fangame that does this, though.

I like how Sonic takes up fully one-fifth of the screen. This seems like a really great demo for people who thought the Game Gear games had too much visibility.

Note: Please don't mind the typo.

    Which one? :specialed:

would be a possibility, but it seems highly unlikely.

When you consider that their Sonic 1 and 2 releases are not just an emulator with new features, but modified rom images, the "emulation is fine" thing doesn't hold up at all; that would qualify it as a new version rather than a rerelease of an old version.
