  1. In Topic: RIP Chikao Otsuka (Japanese voice actor of Eggman)

    26 January 2015 - 02:06 PM

Gonna add this one in here if it hasn't been mentioned already.

He was also the real life father of Akio Otsuka (the Japanese voice actor for Snake from MGS. Fans of Street Fighter will know him as the Japanese Seth voice), and the two performed together for the finale of Metal Gear Solid 4, where they played a fictional father and son.

Here's the cutscene in Japanese with Chikao and Akio Otsuka: https://www.youtube....h?v=1oWSo5KnJ2c
(SPOILER ALART for.. well, the entirety of the MGS franchise I guess!)

It's a tad more emotional now in light of current events.

I'm pretty sure the game is sped up slightly - the music seems faster than it should be, and I've got the game on Mega Drive, Mega Collection AND Steam so I'm pretty sure I'm right.

So, if it's sped up, that surely illegitimately decreases the time, which is pretty rubbish.

    >England

Welcome to 60Hz Mega Drive games. :v: This is running at the correct speed.

You don't know how many joyous tears I cried when the Gamecube Mega Collection asked me if I wanted to play at 60hz. The age of being oppressed by slowdown and borders on the 16-bit classics was a thing of the past.

only for Gems collection to force everything back to 50hz again. thanks sega..
  3. In Topic: Tails Skypatrol Plot

Aye. Tails Adventure was stated to be set before Tails ever met Sonic.

Sky Patrol, however isn't really tied down to being set anywhere in particular. I think fans tend to lump it next to Tails Adventure (as being some kind of 'Tails Game Gear miniseries') to avoid confusion. Not sure if the Japanese manual ever stated anything.

Did Sumo really favour the PS3? I've not really touched the original All Stars Racing, but the Transformed sequel I've played a great deal of, and I much prefer the 360 version of it to the PS3 version. The PS3 version runs at a higher resolution (1280x720, as opposed to the 360's 1152x554), but has real trouble maintaining 30fps. I only played the demo, but it was rare that the game hit its target frame-rate. The 360 version meanwhile uses some very impressive anti-aliasing to mitigate the low resolution, and does a wonderful job of hitting 30fps. I'd be very surprised to hear that Sumo preferred the PS3, especially with it being well renowned as more difficult to make games for. There were also versions of the game for the Wii U, Vita, and 3DS, but I've barely touched those. Digital Foundry assures me that the Wii U version runs at 1024x576, but my memory of playing this version at a friend's house has the game with a frame-rate not dissimilar from the PS3 version. The Vita version has downgraded visuals, but still manages to look very nice, especially on the Vita's OLED screen, albeit again with frame-rate issues. The 3DS version meanwhile runs on a completely different engine, with different assets, so a comparison would be unfair.

First of all. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my curiosity about the Sonic PS3/360 games (and you're right, they won't be last gen until I've finished my backlog!)

In regards to All Stars Racing, I heard the original first game had some framerate problems on the 360 version that had to be patched, wheras the PS3 version ran at a stable 30fps right from the get go. This was where I heard people say "Sumo prefers the PS3" on forums here and there. I wish I had both versions to try to see how true that is..

Although very interesting to hear that Transformed seems to run better on 360. Thank god for Digital Foundry comparing all the releases! :)
  5. In Topic: Classic era timeline, and your own interpretations

    11 December 2014 - 07:23 AM

Oh man.. this topic reminds me of the Sonic HQ Forum days.

Anyway, might as well throw my coins into the pond. Although my logic is 'Keep it Simple'
I'm pretty sure this is the boring arse timeline that most people have though, minus my placing of SegaSonic.

    SegaSonic
    Sonic 1
(either 8-bit or 16-bit. The plot and outcomes are the same.)
    Sonic CD
    Sonic 2
    Sonic 3 & Knuckles
    (Sonic > Knuckles)
    Sonic 4 Ep 1 and 2
    Knuckles Chaotix
    Sonic the Fighters
    Sonic 3D
    Sonic R

Game Gear games are a seperate continuity, because it doesn't require an essay to justify.

I always place SegaSonic first, because why not. Fuck it.

Besides, Sonic 4 isn't going to finish the whole Death Egg II situation, may as well make use of Sonic the Fighters and have that be the conclusion

    I actually agree with this.
Sonic 4 Episode III might never happen, wheras Sonic the Fighters provides a nice follow-on from Episode II's ominous ending.
After all, Death Egg 2 and Death Egg MKII are more or less two different ways of writing the same thing.

(Giving it the liberal 'Seven Emeralds' retcon of course à la Sonic 1 to diffuse any problems, unless you wanna throw some Fake Emerald nonsense around. It doesn't really matter anyway; It's a gameplay macguffin.)
