  1. Sonic's parallax scrolling math

    05 February 2011 - 06:50 PM

Does anyone happen to know the math behind the parallax scrolling in Sonic? I imagine it is some sort of percentage of how far your X position is on the foreground.

    Sooooooon........

Edit: Longer video with gaming action...

  3. Knuckles' Chaotix... ugh

    07 April 2010 - 02:27 PM

Is anyone else so annoyed by the tether feature of this game that they never play it? I just can't enjoy it, I really wish there was a sans tether hack. D:
  4. Platform engines for potential Sonic game

    17 March 2010 - 05:00 PM

The only programming language I'm comfortable with (I mean, making a big project) is Visual Basic 6.0. It's kind of a pain in the ass to get a decent platformer engine going with it. I've got one without scrolling already that I made by hand, it's pretty good. However, I'd like to make a Sonic-like game (or possibly a Sonic fan game) -- which would obviously require scrolling. The question is...

Does anyone know a good platformer engine or "maker" software (not Game Maker, please)? Preferably something with a map/level editor that works in tandem with the engine. I'd just like to go the easy route on this one. Let me know, thanks. smile.png
  5. Just finished Sonic Advance 2

    12 March 2010 - 12:03 AM

Just finished Sonic Advance 2, the most difficult game I've played in a while, lol. Played it the old fashioned way without saves states (VBA + PS2 controller). This was at least 5 times more difficult than the first Advance title, which sort of made it more memorable than the first one? Anyway, I'll do a rundown of the zones like I did in the first Advance thread...

Leaf Forest: Pretty relaxing art, made it almost feel Sonic & Knuckles. The gigantic loop was impressive, and I'm sad it didn't show up anywhere else in the game later on. It was a nice introduction, but it was definitely that "press right to win" thing going on. I like how they made the first Robotnik encounter a hammer like the first Advance title. Made the Advance series seem at home with me already. :P

Hot Crater: Wasn't really a fan of the art in this -- seemed a bit Hellish for a Sonic game. The zone was also another "press right to win", except for a confusing route or two. Nothing really memorable aside from the hideous art and fast-paced speed. The boss was pretty easy, the cannonball was easily timed -- and the boss art seemed kind of Metal Slug?

Music Plant: This was a really cool zone to me... the idea. I liked the bright colors and music when you bounce, etc. It was a pretty enjoyable level and the brass tubes shooting you all over the place felt very Sonic. Though the whole theme would feel better in Kirby or something like that? Maybe Mario? Anyway, it was a really good and original zone to me. The boss was pretty easy, you just had to be patient about jumping on to the disc things.

Ice Paradise: Don't really have much to say about this zone. I think I beat it pretty quickly, is why. The city lights behind a winter wonderland seemed pretty out of place. I bet some people enjoy it though. The boss was pretty tricky at first, but eventually I got the jumping over the bombs while they explode thing down.

Sky Canyon: I almost broke down and started using save states to beat the game because of this zone. I could not figure out that I needed to bounce off that wall to continue playing the zone. So, for like the first 30 lives, I just kept doing the same thing over and over. Finally figured out how to bypass it, and then I kept falling every 10 seconds into pitfalls for the two zones. Until eventually, I got to the boss and had to keep replaying the same 2 zones over and over, falling into pitfalls, only to maybe make it to that boss again (and die on my last life). Pretty much I want Sky Canyon to die. The damned clapping hand on the boss is the bane of my existence.

Techno Base: The art for this zone is burned into my brain. It gets very hard to look at replaying it 523,524 because of pitfalls or tiny ass platforms that you're supposed to land on going at the speed of sound. Basically, this level is even more of a pain in the ass than Sky Canyon and the boss battle is just a little less so. The three little orbs that he shoots at you are sometimes impossible to dodge -- but you can usually get lucky and bounce off him a couple times.

Egg Utopia: This level is pretty heavily inspired by the Death Egg from Sonic & Knuckles. Constantly flipping upside down, and badniks all over the place. The pitfalls in the space background areas are pretty intolerable, and there are like 900 different routes on this level that will send you into spikes, pitfalls, or badniks if you don't land just right. That aside, I got to memorize this level pretty easily... it was the boss battle that really kicked my ass. Hopping to the ceiling and back to the floor while trying to roll into a ball to hit Robotnik properly while trying to avoid fire is the hardest thing in the world. Yes, I wanted that to be an annoyingly long run-on sentence. Anyway, the relief after beating this boss was geat, until...

XX: So, I get to replay all the bosses over again until I get to a giant ass robot. I was impressed by the challenge of it, aside from the giant ass robot. It was easy to understand what to do on the first try, but I died with only 1 life, so it was back to the beginning. The third time I reached him, I beat him. It was really easy to catch my 1 ring left when I'd get hit, so I pretty much played it patiently. I almost died from a timeout though, I had less than 6 full seconds on the clock left.

Of course, I only got to that guy since I didn't gather any emeralds. I played as Sonic to keep it as close to the classic games as possible (I usually don't play as Tails or Knuckles in the original games either). I really liked this game for the shear challenge of it. It took me quite a few days to beat it (mostly because of Sky Canyon and all the other later zones). I think I'll be playing this one again soon. I started Advance 3 earlier, we'll see how that goes. smile.png
