I'm all for handing over the resources for someone else to make a project, though I warn you it's a VERY messy process for most of them. It's not just the character that has to be edited, multiple objects need to be reprogrammed to respond to their new actions. This is sorta why I've been dissuaded from making more than one character per hack.
That's why I suggested that a Tech Member should participate in the process, with some advanced tricks it's probably possible to deal with multiple characters and edited objects in a good and optimised way. Your call, I can open a topic in the Tech Lounge in your behalf if you'll ever decide to take this route. I only gave you a random idea :)

Right, I only mentioned E-122-Psi because he made just so many of them, but if this catches on to be a collaborative project, other people's "SOMEONE in Sonic 1" hacks can be included as well.

I'd keep this separate from SCH though, because of the different scope of those projects. Just my opinion.

Firstly, I've been experimenting with creating drum sounds using the FM synth channels. I know a few Mega Drive games use the FM channels for percussion, either to keep the DAC channel free for sound effects, or to play multiple drum sounds at a time. I was wondering if anyone had some good examples of this? Specifically, bass drums, kick drums, that kind of thing. The Mega Drive is great for bassy sounds in general, so my head tells me it must be able to produce a good kick drum sound via FM synth, surely?
Aside from a handful of official games (which I can link you to, of course), you should know that some sceners around here are very talented with FM drums. For example, you should look at the stuff done by the user "Crash" in the SMPS music competition.

Secondly, once an instrument has been set on one of the FM synth channels, and the music is playing, can the instrument be changed, mid-song? This would obviously be a very useful thing to do, but I've not seen any examples of it in any of the Mega Drive games I've looked at. Is it even possible to do on a technical level without interrupting the song?
Yes. There are at least two drivers (smps and Cube) which allow for that. There is no reason not to allow for that. Any register can be rewritten at any given time.

This means, although the company was not always directly involved, there is a "Sega" game on every Nintendo home video game console
That's neat indeed! Out of curiosity, I tried to look at the "non-sega" category on Sega Retro, and I didn't see any SNES game. Which Sega games are available for that console?
