  1. In Topic: Sonic Boom (Games) Megathread

    30 August 2014 - 12:42 PM

So I was at PAX on Friday (and only Friday), and I played both versions of Boom.

I can say these games aren't bad/terrible, but they're not good either. it's run-of-the mill, generic and mediocre. The demo they had had some pretty funny graphical glitches, like during the chase scene, if you spindash, the spindash effect appears in front of Sonic, rather than over him.

There was also a funny glitch with Amy that made it seem like she had super powers...

Anyways, I do want to emphasize, I did not hate playing this game. But I did not really like it either. It's not a memorable game to me, nothing stands out. I said these things about it: "It looks like a PS2 game with bloom", "Everything looks like it's from a generic sci-fi show or Sonic 06, not something that'd fit in a traditional Sonic game" (and I know this isn't a traditional one, but I will say that tradition is what I base my views on what I think Sonic should be) and "this game could literally be anything else apart from Sonic with a new coat of paint".

And so, I will not get Rise of Lyric. And I did not find Shattered Crystal to be anything special either, personally. So no room for Boom, for me anyway.

I still think somebody needs to port all of FFXIII's stages into Generations. They were hallways, so it'd be like Unleashed Wii but longer! I know it'd probably be terrible but that's why I want it. :V
  3. In Topic: Do Sonic Team even know what makes Sonic good?

    05 December 2013 - 12:10 PM

The thing is, even if Sonic Team finds something that works, they don't want to stick with it too long. That is actually kind of a compliment I can give the series/franchise and the developers. They never stop thinking about new things to do, so staleness is not a complaint we ever really have to worry about. However, it's a double-edged sword. Each gameplay style has had basically a rough beginning. Unleashed had the trial-and-error QTEs that I never thought fit into Sonic (plus he controlled badly at slow speeds), and the slow-and-melee-centric Werehog, plus the required Medals for progression, and dumb RPG-esque stat increases that I found to be needless. Lost World has the issues we all know by now- Forced gimmicks with dumb or unintuitive controls, questionable design choices, and frustrating difficulty, in addition to the recurring problem of too much automation, and also the problem of not sticking with the main style of gameplay (and the main style not being as polished as it should've been as a result of stretching out ideas too far in too little time, a problem Sonic Team keeps encountering thanks to the yearly release schedule for Sonic games and lack of confidence in the replayability/fun of the main style).

When I try to host a server, it just says "Connecting to server at (my ip address) on port (myport) forever, and the same goes for my friend who tries to connect to my IP/port when I try to host the server. Am I doing it wrong or something? I launch SA2BN first, type server, hit enter, enter my port number, hit enter, then launch the game. I've tried having the game launched first, too, but the same thing happened.

For some reason, it seems that the Halloween costume Eggman doesn't get all his upgrades carried over from the normal one. And Halloween Tails accelerates too much/too fast. I tried disabling the Halloween Mod (Month Version) and the normal ones react as they should. This was a very strange glitch to run into, and was made frustrating by the fact I was trying to beat Cannon's Core when playing as those characters, so Eggman's lack of homing lock on and Tails' acceleration got in the way of my progress. Also, it crashed at Sonic's part when I made it over that hill with orange fluid that the ARK uses for powering itself.
