Hi, I rescanned the shots from that other magazine and did some semi-professional cleanup.

This was from the archive at the Brian Sutton Library at the Strong Museum of Play. I can tell you that there are no more shots from this particular build in their archive of Japanese game magazines, though there's a bunch of shots from non-final builds (that may or may not be online already).
  2. In Topic: Interview with Craig Stitt, the mind behind Sonic 2's Hidden Palac

I'd be interested in hearing more about the process of building and testing these levels. Was Craig able to implement and test the art somehow? It sounds like HPZ work was done beyond what we saw, but never committed to a game build...how did that work?

When he mentions "maps," is that in terms of data or paper or what? Did Yasuhara deliver art-less maps that art was put into?

Was the level fully functional at some point?

How were Naka's debug tools? I would assume they were awesome since Sonic levels are among the best ever made, but maybe that's all Yasuhara's foresight?
  3. In Topic: Sonic 1 prototype Video (FAKE)

    08 February 2012 - 07:16 PM

Hi all, since the subject of magazines came up, I just wanted to clear something up from my own independent research: I own literally every U.S. video game magazine published in 1990, and can assure you that the only pictures of that initial tech demo were published in EGM. Yes that includes Sega Visions: remember that Sega Visions was pretty much Sega of America's corporate messaging brochure, they didn't do things like send photographers to shows to preview really early games.

There are three screenshots total, all of which you have, all of which I believe were photographed by EGM editor Ed Semrad at the Tokyo Toy Show on June 7, 1990 and published (sometimes more than once) in EGM issues 13 through 16. None of this will be new to you but here are scans I made myself:

As I even said in that blog post, I wouldn't be surprised if there are more screens in Japanese mags, and this Beep issue confirms my suspicion! Hope we see some actual scans soon.

That's actually not a preview, it's an advertisement. I think the same one ran two months in a row.

Mean Machines, looks like June 1991 to me? June and #9 are definite, year is educated guess as it's not anywhere obvious.
