Nineko, I only know you for a few weeks now, but I am really surprised to see how things have been going for you for the last couple of days, because I'm sure you're usually a nice reasonnable guy :o.

I really don't understand why you are having such a strong reaction, and from what I've seen, nobody else understands it either ... So I guess I'm not wrong when I see you as a nice guy !

But now I think it's not that important to explain your reasons. What I see is that nobody is taking advantage of the situation to say nasty things about you, and several people are expressing their regrets about your sudden departure. You are appreciated here, in this community ^_^.

So, maybe I'm not well placed to talk about this subject since I'm still just a newcomer in the community, but I want to show that I'm one of the people here that wish you to come back and not take what we are doing here too seriously. Please Nineko, come back to reason ! :worship:

As far as original vs. ported, that can potentially be a grey area. What exactly are the definitions of the two?

Right now, I'm assuming "ported" music is anything from another MD game (general SMPS ports) while original music would be anything else.


However, say I compose a midi of Live and Learn and import it into a game. It would be original to the SMPS format, but not original as a song. This would limit original music to anything actually composed by the programmer.

If you were to go with the latter, you'd probably have to require a list of original songs if applicable.

This is what I think on the subject...


Original = Made by yourself
Ported = Not made by yourself


You get a MIDI from somewhere else = Ported
You make a MIDI and then convert it = Original

I think the line between them is so blurred that it's not even worth splitting them. Music awards should be given based on how well the music fits the levels and other situations, not necessarily the music choices themselves as a whole.

I honestly don't think it would be fair if some professional music, taken from somewhere else, would be rated in the same cathegory than some nice sounding music composed by the mod's creator.

Professional music is always going to sound better because they were given specialized tools that made things much easier, and porting their work involves a different kind of effort than making your own music from scratch.

How well the music fits the level would be considered for both, however making you own music and ripping off someone else's requires a different set of skills.. and if I combined them I'd choose original over ported regardless. That's why I initially split them. I'm a raver =P I'm into music.

I'm sorry, but unless the music is COMPLETELY original and not simply an imported work by somebody else, you simply cannot differentiate the two with absolute certainty. Anyone can use xm2smps—it's not really any more work than using, say, Music Pointer Fixer or some equally automated program. The difference between those programs and the results is, of course, the extra effort you take to make sure that the ports actually sound correct. I couldn't even TELL you how many hacks just use the direct output and call it a day. At least with Megamix I do everything properly... and if you ask me, that kind of effort shouldn't be overlooked based on whatever presumptuous view you have on the art of music porting.

The difference could be wether you had to make the music, or it was already done and you had to port it, but I personally think that making your own version of a known track could be considered as "original" as well, since you had to make it yourself... but that's just my oppinion.

I don't think people is gonna try to cheat by telling us they did something that was really other's work.

That's why there's another cathegory for ported music, which Megamix is probably gonna win.
