Random thought when I was goofing around on the piano the other day. Figured I'd play some Sonic 3 stuff. I tried playing some of the Credits and went "no no no, that's not right, that's from the Final Boss theme. ...!"

    And lo and behold...

They do in fact have a common theme between them. It's a short ditty, but both themes are short to begin with.

*SIGH* I've uploaded the Credits one about four different ways now and it's giving me shit, one minute plz.

    There, now they work =_=

Unfortunately, I haven't the manual dexterity to switch between two tabs/windows and hit two Play buttons simultaneously; could you provide an overlap so I can hear the shared melody?

You don't have to do it simultaneously, just play them one after the other. The tune is memorable and the connection is obvious.

    Good find ;P

Haha! Nice find! Now which song was created first: The credits or the final boss? :P

They're not 100% identical but certainly close enough to be no coincidence. Good observation!

Since the Credits theme is (as we've seen from Jim's documentary) based pretty directly on "Stranger in Moscow", I imagine the Credits theme came first, which was used to put together the Final Boss theme (not at all unlike Sweet Dream, the "finale" theme, being used for all sorts of themes elsewhere in Sonic 2)

Nononono, see, people who worked with MJ on the album that contains Stranger in Moscow (and a couple other albums that also have songs with Sonic 3 similarities) also worked on Sonic 3's music. So MJ himself probably didnt do it, just one of his posse.

As a musician , I can't even begin to count the number of times I've used similar motifs in seperate songs. I guess it's just one of those things you can't escape.

I have confirmed this a number of times and all of MJ's work was original compositions, and the only tape of this recides in MJ's lawyers hands.

If there is a similarity, it is most definitely put in by the sound staff that worked with MJ on the project.
